It is the second book I've read by the author, Guy New York, and by the 2nd page I was flipping through it and didn't stop until I reached the conclusion.
The book is told in the first-person narrative by Alice, over a 3-day period. Alice is an educated, sure-of-herself young lady that's had a crush on Mr. Richards for some time. The introductory page gives us enough background to know Alice well, but it doesn't slow the book down as the main plot & story fires off like a rocket ship directly afterwards, and doesn't slow down until the climax (pun-intended).
It's very interesting seeing it from Alice's perspective. There's a moment where you don't know if Mr. Richards is playing mind games or if he's simply aloof. We find out the truth very soon, though.
Regarding the length of the book, I really like that I was able to read it in one quick 30-minute sitting, but I wish it were longer. In fact, I would have rated it 4 stars instead of 5, but I love the subject matter: Dominance/submission, innocence, mystery, and slight taboo undertones.
Alice's character is developed much more than Mr. Richards. He's left to be somewhat of a mysterious character. However, there's a window into his mind at the very end of the book which I thought was very nice.
(Slight spoilers: I'm in a D/s relationship myself, and I loved picking up one or two small ideas from this book, and I was very gratified when I saw Mr. Richards "break" character after they had sex and gave Alice the aftercare that she and every precious submissive deserves. It reminded me a bit of my relationship. Mr. Richards is all about his own pleasure and her serving him, but once it's all over, he wants nothing more than to comfort Alice. I thought it was very well done.)
Anyway, as you can see -- I really enjoy the D/s dynamic. Again, if it weren't D/s related I would have given it four stars for the shortish length. But since it's right up my alley, it was perfect.
Read it if you like short, 30-minute stories involving explicit sex scenes, obedient submissives serving a dominant, and a simple story about a young, sexually-inexperienced 18-year-old getting the education of her life.
On the other hand, don't read it if you prefer longer books where it takes a while for the characters to develop. These two characters seem to "jump into bed together" very quickly, but it's mainly because we aren't privy to the 2-year-buildup that would have accompanied a longer book. Alice does fill us in on some of it briefly, though, and that was nice to read.
All in all, I thought it was great.
