This is a Very Interesting Find!
This Book, which I Always Knew about, but Never seen, is actually one of TWO books with the Same Title & Same use of Sue Catwoman image for the Cover. (the Other book, was more a Pulp size paperpack, of Shocking "reports" about the Emerging World of Punk Rock, Including London, NYC, & Underground LA scenes, Still Hunting That down)!
Published by Penguin Books, in 1978, as a first Seemingly, Shock point "Expose" about the Crazy ol' World of Punk Rock, during it's First year. BUT this book is much More.
It has Lots of Great Pictures of Fashions, Music Groups, & Info about the UK Punk Rock Scene.
Its Most Striking bit of History, & Very Large part of the Book, is listings & Reviews of the Handmade 'Zine's. Their Journalistic component of the Early scene. This Book could be used to Study this particular aspect of the Punk Rock world's Do It Yourself, Reflection of What was Really Going on in the Clubs etc, away from the Usual Music Weekly's or Tabloid driven Horror aspects, reporting of the Scene. It shows there Was More than Just Sniffin' Glue & A Few Others.
This was my Biggest Surprise in getting this Book. Author Virginia Boston is a Scholar & using her own Fascination, from a Sociological standpoint, makes the Long Out Of Print, tome, worth Rediscovering! She Didn't Act Above her subject. (Often a Problem, I Find with Some Punk Rock Historians, like Jon Savage, etc. This Feeling of Intellectual Superiority) She Just Reported What she Observed.
An Updated version, with these described 'Zines reproductions, included, would be Just Fantastic!!
