I was torn between whether or not I should by this in medium or large and ended up choosing the larger size to be on the safer side but second guessed myself quite a lot. I have two dogs a 16 lbs Dachshund and a 17.5 lbs Terrier-Poodle Mix I wanted this style of harness for both of them but only ordered one to see how I like it and how it fits them. They both usually fit a medium in regular strap type harnesses.
The Terriers measurements are Neck: 12 inches and Chest Grid: 18.5 inches, he is rather lean with long legs but I let his hair grow in winter so he sports a thick and fluffy coat at the moment.
The large size fits him but is on the looser side on the smallest setting, his head goes through the opening easily which is nice the chest strap on the smallest setting does work but has room for play. On our test walks with it went finde so far, he doesn't pull much but does when he gets excited the harness seems to discourage pulling but that might just be because the pressure is distributed differently and it was a strange new sensation when pulling. All in all it works for him and I plan on keeping it but he might be able to wiggle out of it if he really wanted to, he seems to feel quite comfortable in it.
Now to the Dachshund he is 16lbs, his measurements are 13.5 inches around the base of the neck and a little less than 18 inches around the chest. The large size is definitely too big for him. The chest strap is too loose and due to his dachshund body shape and short legs his front paws kept slipping through the head opening twice yesterday when I had him wearing it around the house, he usually has the same problem when wearing dog sweaters.
I have since ordered a medium as well in hopes that it will fit my dachshund better.
This is the first harness we found that does not dig into their armpits, "breathes", does not mat their fur and has a closure that is big enough to operate with ease.
Harnesses are recommended for small dogs because they do not put pressure on the neck vertebrae, but most rub and irritate the armpits area and mat the fur at the contact points.
These provide full control, are sturdy, yet made of soft mesh that is easy to wash and fast-drying (excellent for the beach).
Puppia makes other models as well, but none are as good as this one.
Size-wise, we originally bought XL. Now, 5 years later, they are still looking brand new (no fraying/unraveled stitches after many many hours of use in wet and dry conditions).
We purchased these last two in a size L because the XL is a little too big after grooming and for $19.99 we just could not pass up the opportunity of having a spare.
A couple of small dog owning friends we recommended these harnesses to simply rave about them.
We love them, but most importantly our "babies" love them too.
I ordered the sky blue which is a very bright, vibrant and pretty light blue color.
It is a very high quality harness. It is made of a thick material and holds up well over time. It is soft and did not cause any redness or irritation to my dog.
Thanks to this harness my dog stopped pulling on walks and learned to walk close beside me. He has outgrown it so we no longer use it but I really recommend this harness.
We bought two harnesses for our adult pugs. They are more comfortable than any other we've had for them. The only way you'll get a better fit and more comfort is to have a custom made. Peachy Keen ([...]) out of Canada makes the best custom harnesses, Niki G is a pug owner and KNOWS her stuff. =.)) Back to these soft wonders though. Easily tossed in the washer when dirty, do not dry however. Our pugs loved these. Sturdy and easily put on as well. I would highly recommend these to anyone, especially if you have a little one who is still growing, there is some give in these and once you get your baby fully grown you can easily have a harness custom made. These are affordable enough to use for your puppies though.
