However, I do have a beef with calling this a "pre-reader" book, presumably for kids learning to sound out words, recognize sight words, etc. We first encountered this series (Ready to Read, Pre- Level 1) with the "Otto" books and they were a home-run, in my opinion. This one ... not so much. Far more words that don't follow the standard patterns of phonics than do make up the story. Hard, indeed, for my brand-new reader to make a go of.
Pre-Level 1 - Recognizing Words
Level 1 - Starting to Read
Level 2 - Reading Independently
Level 3 - Reading Proficiently
At 5, my daughter is currently at Level 1. In these pre-level 1 books, children who are starting to show an interest in reading will find the story of Puppy Mudge (and a rather large puppy he is too!) interesting and engaging. Mudge gets into all sorts of scrapes and the stories rely on certain key words being repeated throughout the story. These books are suited for children ages 4-6.
