I loved the info on what breeders should be doing to prepare puppies for life in their new homes. Hopefully, it will encourage more breeders to do what they need to do to get their puppies off to a good start. I think it is helpful for puppy buyers as well; what the breeder has done is something many people don't give a thought when they choose a new puppy and it's so important. I will definitely be recommending this book to clients with new puppies as well as those who are considering breeding their dogs
Caryl's done an excellent job of tackling a complex and critical subject and has produced an excellent reference for folks with dogs of all ages and all breeds and backgrounds. Early socialization remains a controversial topic between the veterinary and dog training community, and this book provides a huge amount of factual and scientifically-supportable information to help people make good decisions about rearing and training their family dogs. Definitely needs to be on the book shelf of anyone who has or is planning to get a dog or puppy. Thanks, Caryl!
Another great book from Caryl Wolff. I have read her work before and this book is of the same high quality. Not only many helpful tips, but very enjoyable reading. I love the way practical insights are given in a humorous, understanding way. Although I have had dogs before, I've never had a new puppy --- but plan to get one very soon. I bought this book so I would be prepared in advance !!! I have a busy lifestyle with lots of family, friends and travel, and want to be able to take my new pup with me to places where "socialization" is necessary. I'm sure that the tips in this book will help ease the way for both of us when we start our new adventure together.
This is a great book! I'm a 'people and their dogs' trainer and I'm recommending it to every client I have. It should be required reading for every potential puppy and dog owner/adopter. It shoots it straight from the hip about what dogs need. Which is not always what owners want or need. And it puts a big chunk of responsibility on the breeder to do what pups need prior to going to their new homes. It defines socialization, socialize, social, and habituation, the first three in particular, that are so miss understood by the dog owning public and also by a lot of trainers. I'd give it 7 or 8 stars if I could!
Very clear and a wonderful book for anyone with a puppy or thinking of getting a puppy. The Appendix section contains such great information as well. I recommend this book for breeders as well. Her section on developmental stages while the puppy is still with the breeder is great! Rescue organizations and others who work with puppies can truly benefit from this information and help the puppies in their care develop much more confidence.
I read this book and I haven't stop thinking how it could have an enormous impact on the future of dogs. I highly recommend it for the first time dog owner, the experienced dog owner, the trainer, the breeder, the doggy daycare owner, the groomer and anybody interested in dogs. It's chockful of good information and wish many people will read it so they can learn how important socialization is for puppies. I really think this book has the potential to make the world a better place for dogs and their owners.
I loved this book! I had one dog prior to getting a new puppy this week, and honestly I didn't remember much. So this book was a wonderful refresher. I loved the stroller plan while waiting for the full set of shots. My Vet also thought it was a great idea, she already knew I was crazy dog person. :) My puppy Midas really enjoyed your idea, too.
I really enjoyed it -- I ended up reading the whole thing in one day. Definitely learned many valuable lessons. I highly recommend this ebook to anyone who will be bringing home a puppy in the near future. Five stars.
