Editorial Reviews

Internationally renowned gypsy punk rock group Gogol Bordello return with their sixth full-length album Pura Vida Conspiracy via ATO Records/Casa Gogol Records on July 23. Produced by Andrew Scheps, the new album was recorded in El Paso, Texas at Sonic Ranch Studios and is a powerful collection of 12 surging new songs.
The album s title is derived from a Spanish slang phrase for pure life, which is a theme that resonates throughout the new material. The disc s opener, We Rise Again, introduces the album s limitless, all-embracing themes instantly, centered on a chorus of Borders are scars on face of the planet. The new songs are infused with ideas rooted in Eastern philosophy but also search for a means of joining fragmented parts and persons, and of creating a worldwide consciousness.
For me music is a way to explore human potential, Hutz says. And that s my main interest in life human potential. Everyone knows there s something inside of us that we re not using. How do we get it? How do we reach it? Every single person knows that there s something and nobody knows what it is. So at one point I said to myself, I m gonna get down and get it.

Incredible new CD.Each new work from Eugene and family changes in subtle and fascinating ways. This one easily shifts from a sea shanty to Latin influenced tune and somehow carries the undercurrents of Gypsy Punk throughout. There aren't many bands that I wonder what will be the next change with such excitement. Gogol Bordello has never failed to amaze. The only way they do is when they are live. Solid writing, great musicianship and endless passion have made them my favorite band.

As a longtime fan, I enjoyed the new CD. At the same time, it really doesn't seem to add much to the Gogol Bordello canon. Don't get me wrong, I've enjoyed the new songs. A standout for me was 'Malandrino', a sort-of romantic ballad ("...I was born with a singing heart"). Beyond that (and the driving 'We Rise Again', for example), most of it was more of the same. I guess I shouldn't complain. Even if it sounds a little like their last couple of albums, I've gotten some mileage out of all of them!

This album, like the other Gogol Albums, is very good, authentic and unique. Let me get a little preachy for a minute. Most folks tend to download a few songs from each of their favorite artists and live off a mixed playlist of their favorite songs. Sure, it's nice to hear an Edward Sharpe song followed by John Coltrane and Swedish House Mafia. Unfortunately, though, the mixed bag of great songs diminishes the experience of live music. If you don't know the body of work of an artist, you'll never get as much out of a live concert.

This band is one of the top live acts period. If you try to understand the music and familiarize yourself with it beforehand, then you might find that the concert will be much more intense. The Gogol fans know pretty much every word to every song--the area in front of the stage is filled with fervor and joy, not to mention a few bumps and bruises. So try listening to their albums, learn them, and participate. In other words, get off the mixed playlist and get to know this music. When you see these guys live, your investment will pay off.

I am not a hardcore Gogol fan, but I have a couple of their best albums... I have listened to this new album about a dozen times before making a decision. An easy decision at that! This is a fantastic album, every single song is a joy to listen to, and there are no fillers. Fantastic album! This may well be their best work to date!

If you bought this album expecting it to sound like their early stuff, you will be pleased with only a few tracks. This album stands alone as a different direction from their previous gypsy punk sound.

Pura Vida Conspiracy is another great album from Gogol Bordello. This one is a little more 'melodic' maybe than some of their previous albums. Some do say it is too 'polished' or 'overproduced' - whatever, i still love this one just as much as Super Taranta.

You can tell just from the album cover that Pura Vida Conspiracy isn't going to be like Gogel's last album Trans Continental Hustle. While Pura Vida retains the same gypsy punk style Gogol has become known for over the years, it has a rawer energy like my favorite Gogol album Super Taranta! Pura Vida has an unpolished quality that makes you think the songs would sound the same if you listened to them live. Don't get me wrong I think Trans Continental is a 5 star album. It was a breakthrough that a major label like American signed them and Rick Rubin produced Trans Continental. Rick Rubin's sound came through in the album. Since Trans Continental, Gogol signed with Dave Matthew's ATO Records. It seems like they have more of their artistic freedom back with ATO and the result is another outstanding album from the gypsy punk band.

Solid album. Great transition into some new styles, and a good job at increasing accessibility without losing their gypsy soul. As a longtime Gogol fan, this is not one of my favorite albums (which is a tight choice between Super Taranta or Transcontinental Hustle). Super Taranta is a wild party of an album - filled with songs meant to be taken out of the album and performed live. Transcontinental Hustle was the most solidly produced album - and probably their masterpiece so far - and is the only album excels at tossing around your emotions. Yes, it is a Rick Rubin album, but why is that bad thing? That said, this album still rocks and I'm glad Gogol is still Gogol.
