Magnesium activates the enzymes necessary for a number of physiological functions, including neuromuscular contractions, cardiac function, and the regulation of the acid-alkaline balance in the body. It is necessary for the metabolism of carbohydrates, amino acids and fats; also for energy production, and the utilization of calcium, phosphorus, sodium, and potassium. This vital mineral also helps utilize B-complex vitamins, vitamin C, and vitamin E.

Since magnesium is involved in so many processes in the body, a deficiency can manifest itself with a variety of symptoms, the most common of which is muscle cramps. In my case, however, it's hearth arrhythmia.
Magnesium is a quite reactive metal, so as a supplement you will always find it in the form of a salt or cheated to an amino acid. The different forms of magnesium can be quite different, however, in the way they are absorbed and metabolized by the body.
-Magnesium oxide is the absolute worst (and unfortunately it's the form usually found in cheaper multivitamins) because it doesn't really get absorbed by the body, so it's a waste of time.
-Magnesium sulfate (Epsom Salts) is also not good to use internally because of poor bioavailability p.
-Magnesium citrate is probably the best bang for your buck, it's fairly bioavailable and usually cheap. Beware though that with magnesium citrate you can easily get diarrhea.
-Magnesium maleate is also pretty good in terms of bioavailability and it's unlikely to cause diarrhea, but I found that at doses of 100% RDA I would get nausea that would last for a few hours.
Magnesium glycinate, so far, has been my favorite (I'm testing magnesium threonate which is very promising, but too soon to write on that). It's very bioavailable, it doesn't cause diarrhea or any other side effects, and it works for my purpose: I take it when I get arrythmia and it makes it go away.
I'm also very happy with the Pure Encapsulation brand.Read more ›
As for the Magnesium, it has really done wonders for my sleep. I'm one of those people who has a difficult time falling asleep (especially after a stressful day), but these pills knock me out 30-60 minutes after taking them. I take one magnesium capsule at night along with one Garden of Life mykind Organics Plant Calcium, 180 Organic Tablet since I'm sensitive to dairy and don't usually get the RDA through my regular diet.
The capsules are a good size: not too large, but not tiny either. I personally find them easy to swallow. The container is plastic and quite small, so it doesn't take up too much room in my cabinet.
I can't believe how much better I feel. In just two days, you'll feel a difference!
