Review

“The mega-selling [Danielle Steel] shares happy memories of her numerous dogs. . . . Steel brings readers into her life, recounting delightful moments with her many dogs, the dogs her children have owned, and her newest friend, Minnie, her tiny Chihuahua. . . . Plainly told with honesty and affection, these stories are an affirmation of the timeless connection between humans and their canine companions.”Kirkus Reviews

“Steel doesn’t just love to write blockbusters; she loves dogs. Here’s her valentine to all the dogs she’s raised (looking to be mostly of the small sort), with lots of black-and-white photos throughout. A heady commercial combo.”Library Journal

Danielle Steel delivers a heartwarming, inspiring story about all the dogs in her life. She speaks with compassion and happiness that tugs at the heart, reminding me so much of the love I also have for dogs. As I read on about her delightful dog stories she shares with the reader, I was relating to so many things she said that rings the truth. I agree with her belief of how dogs can fill in the void of loneliness and solitude, as I observe how much happiness my daughter has been given from her dog. She is a Special Needs, and 'Valentine' plays a big part in her life, for happiness and therapy. It was the best gift I could have ever given her and not a day goes by, where she doesn't share another funny story about Valentine, that warms my heart to see the joy on her face. Danielle Steel reminds us all about an imperfect world, filled with heartbreak, and disappointments. She discusses the 'empty nest syndrome' and how lonely it can be for people of all ages. The author also reminds us of how good a dog can make you feel about life, how the companionship of a dog compensates for many who live in isolation, and how much of a gift a dog can be as it continues to love. In addition, Danielle Steel shares her stories about all the dogs she gave to friends and family, that proved to be a rewarding experience in her chapter titled, "The gift That Keeps On Giving." There are also precious photos of the dogs she has owned, including her pride and joy, Minnie Mouse. Chiquita was her first Chihuahua, and Minnie Mouse is the object of her affections. Minnie is her most lovable dog, who warms her heart, and makes her laugh. She had Chiquita, until age sixteen. The author also shares her funny, family dog stories, and touching stories of loss.Read more ›

I am an animal lover and also work with animals as I am a veterinary assistant. I thought she was going to tell stories about each of her dogs but none of the stories contained anything with substance. The only dog she truly went in depth describing was Minnie (who sounds like she is an absolute doll). It seems to me that her book is just her justifying why/how she gets all her pets - this info isn't interesting but very boring. I am also not impressed that she purchased many (not all but many) of her dogs via breeders or pet shops - that does not impress me one bit. Also, I hear people talk about how she talks about her pug - but that is only a very small part of the book and she does not describe him that much or even have a good story about him - and, he died of heat stroke - not sure I would have shared that with the world. I guess I was looking for lighthearted pet stories and all I got was a rich lady patting herself on the back for giving people dogs as gifts and having several dogs at one time. I am sure her pets have wonderful lives but the book was not at all worth the time I spent reading it.

This book was my first non-fiction book by Danielle Steel and it was cute and loveable. I mean how can you really criticize someone's life and decisions....She basically tells her story from having many dogs and many kids and how she went about getting them etc. Some of the reviews were unreal really. She has also given dogs as gifts to family and friends and she describes how life changing they have been. I really agree with her in a lot of ways. I bought my cat and the love of my life Sheila at Century III Pet Shop in Pittsburgh, PA before I knew a lot of pet shops sell puppy mill dogs but I wouldn't change getting Baby Kitty my Himalayan nor Sheila my little Iggy (Italian Greyhound) for anything in the world! They are the 2 best pets ever! But the book has a few pictures of her dogs and some really good tips about knowing your vet and how important it is just like knowing your doctor for yourself! Good Book 4 doggie biscuits for this book!

I picked up this book thinking it would be filled with heartwarming tales of dog ownership. What I read concerns me greatly. I know what a popular author Ms. Steel is and I'm concerned that people who love her books will think this is what you should do when you want a dog. Please understand NO REPUTABLE BREEDER SELLS PUPPIES TO PET STORES OR TO BE AUCTIONED OFF! All serious, reputable breeders, who should be members of breed clubs, sign a code of ethics, which specifically prohibits selling puppies to pet stores etc. Dogs should NEVER be given chocolate of ANY KIND, it contains theobromine, which is LETHAL to dogs. She states you shouldn't and then goes on to say they had a dog who they fed chocolate!! If you are looking to purchase a purebred puppy start with the AKC or the national breed club. All pure breeds have them. Go to a reputable breeder!! Ms. Steel states several times throughout the book that she decided to purchase Minnie and "why not who have I hurt by buying this puppy?" By purchasing puppies from pet stores you are perpetuating irresponsible breeding from backyard breeders and puppy mills. You are continuing the misery that stems from these operations. PLEASE ACT RESPONSIBLY!!
