Flip Flop Hub: Freewheel or Fixed Flexibility
Pure Cycles chose a flip-flop rear hub to give you the flexibility to ride fixed or freewheel. Riding fixed gives you an unmatched feeling of connectedness to the bike, the road, and helps you perfect your pedal stroke. Riding freewheel gives you the ability to coast and cruise. No matter what you choose, the standard front brake gives you the ability to stop either way.

Assembly was actually easier than I initially thought. The first 30 seconds of the tutorial video he sites all these tools you need (most of which where specific to the bike mechanic and not everyday tools). I thought I was going to need to take to a shop but quickly realized you can put this together with everyday tools. The specific bike tools probably just make it easier. Overall very pleased with purchase, however, the price point is about hundred dollars cheaper than depicted because tires and brakes seem to be something that will quickly need an upgrade. None the less I'm happy with the purchase.
In recent times, I have biked or Trikked to the gym whenever possible. It is straight and flat. I seldom shift on my bike and can't shift on the Trikke. When the LBS declared my beater bike kaput, I thought about converting it to fixed gear. But after looking at conversion kits, I decided it would be cheaper and easier to just buy a new bike. I happened into a Pure Fix Oscar.
This solid bike looks as good as some of the bikes in the book. The frame is heavier than my old aluminum bike, but it is well built and rides well. It reminds me of my first commuter bike, a converted mountain bike that I had for decades and put thousands of miles on.
One of the tubes on the PF had or developed a pinhole out of the box and I had to replace it. Unfortunately, the replacement tube was also defective and burst while I was adjusting the kickstand. The third tube has held up OK, so I am glad it is not a wheel defect causing the leaks.
The components are of surprisingly good quality. I thought I would replace more parts but have ended up keeping a lot. I did put on a trekking bar, kickstand, rear rack, and my old saddle. This bike is made to be customized. It is not a beater bike, but more like a bling bike that can take some beating.
And lastly, a note to all of you first time fixie buyers: Don't assemble this bike yourself. I know George makes it look just fine and dandy on Youtube but there's a little more to it. Take it to a bike shop and get it put together, no matter how bad you want to ride this baby. I actually put my pedal on wrong and stripped out the crank, forcing me to go to the shop and wait two weeks for a new one to be ordered. So yeah, you might think you put it together the right way, but two days later your pedal falls off and you're down a whole bike. That being said, the bike is excellent. It's on the heavy side for a road bike but I like the weight of it nonetheless, I'm not a weight nazi so I'm not too concerned about how heavy my bike is. The 44/16 ratio will be extremely difficult to skid stop on, you have to be a pro to even do one still sitting in your seat, so don't think you'll be skidding on this right away. Run a front brake and don't be ashamed, no brakes are for the velodrome. A+ bike purefix! Not only do I get a lot of compliments on my bike, but I might have sent you a few customers. Will continue to recommend, just switch out those tires!
