Chilling plot that captures nicely the typical callousness in attitude toward those who are different; as well as the thin justifications and rationales of those who can pretty much pay their way into getting whatever they want (Affluenza). I also found it kind of disturbing how not a single character was original; in fact they were so stereotypical for race, gender, and socioeconomic status that the only remarkable thing that could be said about them…was that they could not have possibly been more stereotypical.

Enjoyable, scary, and intriguing concept.

I prefer, however, the second and third films in the series, largely because of Frank Grillo.

While they are less "intense" and more broadly played than the first entry, they are fun action popcorn films.

Premise ...near future and America gets the bright idea ( since crime is so low ) so set aside one day a year (The Purge) so people can purge their frustrations ....on Purge Day for 12 hours ALL crime is allowed , ER's are closed and ...people can kill maim all they want without legal action against them .....

Ok ...first the Pro: Ethan Hawke ...what can I say the guy can carry a pig through a den of hyenas and he does. Good actor carrying a pig of a movie. Look .... crime is already low .... so low as to be almost unmeasureabvle ...so we need THE PURGE? Come on ....how about working out, sports, uh ...even some fight club ...but THE PURGE? Eh ......no. Premise flawed beyond repair .... got a 3 only for decent acting and ...yeah .... kick ass fight scenes.

I've stayed away from The Purge because of friends saying it's somewhat boring for its concept. Yeah -- they're right. There's a great premise that's never really fleshed out. Instead, it's a creepy home invasion film brought on by circumstances that wind up being ten times more interesting. Watch this if you'd like to learn more about The Purge universe, but don't expect your world to be changed.

Before you read any further, I only gave this 3 stars because I like action films. But the unbelievable stupidity of some of these characters pretty much ruins the first half of this film. If you are anything like me, where the bad start of movie can ruin your day...then skip this film all together. But if a home invasion film peaks your interest then for the right price you should see it. I personally feel that this film will only appeal to today's horror film crowds.

Disappointing in its horror. There was so much more the filmmakers could have done with this concept, it's hard to sit through. But it is a terrific concept for a hoor movie and maybe the remake in 10 years will do it justice. And what is the deal with Ethan Hawke? He never quite gets there in any of the roles I've seen him play.

A scary possibility that can become part of society in the future? I hope not. Good movie, worth the watch. I keep it simple. I enjoyed it, but not enough to watch part II and III it was not so motivating that it required further additional titles. But I do enjoy watching Ethan Hawke who is a wonderful actor.
