LIKE GOLDILOCKS, WE SLEEP ON A LOT OF BEDS, TOO
1989 found two brothers, engineers Tony and Terry Pearce, fly fishing in the Rockies and talking about partnering to change the world. Tony’s 13 years of experience in advanced aerospace materials, and Terry’s 20 years of experience in manufacturing, design, and project management, led to a partnership creating high-tech carbon fiber sporting goods and wheelchairs.
Three years ago, the Pearces set out to combine all their knowledge of cushioning into the world’s best mattress.
Today, they’re delivering that mattress.

6 months later I'm going to throw it in the garbage and get something else. It's turned to MUSH, and I wake up with a sore back every morning and toss and turn all night. I weigh 190. I notice if I move around on the bed to find stiffer areas I will sleep ok, but I've run out of places to go.
I'm primarily a side sleeper, which if you look over other reviews people warn that these beds are not good for those, and they're right. Once it wears in it feels like a deflated air mattress. Very disappointing for the money I spent on it.
I purchased my queen Purple direct from the Purple website, so I can't vouch for the Amazon process. I was very interested in the 100 day sleep trial and my understanding is that is not available through Amazon.
The order and shipping process through Purple was very easy and quick. I think our mattress arrived in about a week. It was packaged in an easy to move wrapped roll. There was good thought put into the packaging, shipping and unpacking process. Once opened we let it sit on the floor overnight so it could fully decompress.
Overall I give Purple 4 stars for comfort. It's a very comfortable mattress and after a few weeks I really started sleeping well on it. It's very different feeling than any other mattress I've ever slept on, but I adjusted pretty quickly. So good marks in overall comfort.
The two things that wound up being deal breakers for us: My wife is very sensitive to how hot a mattress sleeps and this one had her sweating on some nights. I experienced this a few times ,but not as much as she did. I can see it being an issue because you do sink into this mattress quite a bit...especially in the butt and shoulder area. As a result I did experience a few sweaty nights due to it and my wife had issue with it more often than not.
The other thing is that it is not a standard queen size. I've read this a few other places, but the top layer of the mattress is a few inches short (length wise) than standard. I took some measurements and the bottom layer of foam seems to be about right. 80" is the standard queen length and this measured close enough. The issue comes with the top two layers. The middle layer was a little bit shorter...probably 78-79" and the topper layer was even shorter at about 77". Not a huge deal for most I am sure, but at 6'3" that only leaves me with an inch at top and bottom...my feel would hang off the bed if I didn't center myself exactly right.
If you look at the mattress from the top there is a definite difference from the bottom layer to the top (at least on the one we got).
I was also a bit unhappy with the edge collapse I experienced. There's a definite difference in feel when pressing on the edge of the mattress and pressing further in toward the middle. This has to be due to the material used in the topper....it collapses outward when weight is put on the edge, so that means needing to sleep so no part of your body is putting weight on the edge. On a queen with 2 people that can be difficult.
In the end I had to take advantage of the refund policy. We gave it about 5 or so weeks and just couldn't get past those issues. Again, comfort wise it was a winner and I wish that it had worked out.
I do have to give Purple props for how they handle returns. From my initial email inquiring about returning to having the mattress picked up was only a few days. They take it on the nose as well....they paid a company pick our mattress up for recycling. I will try to update this when the refund is posted to my card to give an idea of how long that takes once proof of pick up is provided.
but when I got this bed and i unroll it. It was a bit lumpy in some spots. I thought maybe need more time unfluff or something. now it's been 2 months. so my friend helped me take cover off. The cubes are deformed. so I'm not getting the full experience of this bed. I don't know how they didn't notice this before they mailing it out. I hope they can replace it this is a $1000 mattress I'm inventing in for heath as better night sleep. I don't have the funds to throw a other $1000. lucky I did get warranty and hope i get a replacement. I will be really mad if I don't. I warn anyone not get it if I don't.
I'm hoping when I get not deform purple mattress i can have better opinion.
Let me first start by saying I was really excited about this bed. I paid for overnight shipping because I really wanted this bed. We were placing it in my parents home that we may stay at 20 nights a year. Let me tell you a little about me. I am on the heavy and tall side 6'5" 300 lbs. I am a side and back sleeper.
That said, I tried this bed for 6 nights. Each night I became more and more uncomfortable. The purple bed was comfortable for an hour nap, but much longer and I became sore in my neck, head, and shoulders. I woke up several times a night due to shoulder soreness, which i have never experienced before. Not sore at my shoulder blades, but more to the outside and top near my clavicle. Pressure sore, and sore to the touch. My wife also woke several times each night due to pain. For her, the pain was at her lower back. The first night we slept with regular sheets. Every other night we used stretchy sheets. It made a little difference, but not enough to be comfortable.
The purple marketing did not live up to the hype in my opinion. However, if you are going to try it, buy it from purple not amazon!

So, let me go into some detail:
I bought this mattress through Amazon because it was cheaper than going directly to Purple. You don't get the free gift that you might get with Purple, plus the returns window is only 30 days instead of 100 but still the saving is quite significant.
I don't know if it was only related to the size of the item but my delivery took over a week despite being "guaranteed" for the next day. Take this into consideration if you need a mattress quickly (e.g. if you have just moved into a new house/apartment and need something to sleep on as we did!).
The mattress arrived in it's purple plasitc bag, this was pretty beaten up - torn at one end etc. but the mattress inside was fine as there's additional packaging inside. It's a heavy lump, weighs about 100lbs and it's pretty difficult to maneuver around but I managed it. You cut the plastic off, unroll the mattress and then cut the vacuum wrap which allows it to inflate. All in all, this wasn't too hard.
The feel of the mattress is unique, if you run your hand over it, it has a weird springy rubbery feel and I had high hopes for it after watching all of the advertising etc.
Initially when lying on it, it does feel comfortable, but you sink some way into it and then stop. It feels as if the purple rubbery layer should be thicker and as if you're reaching the "limit" of the cushioning. I am 5'10 and ~190lbs to give you some idea, and my butt definitely felt like it was hitting the harder underparts of the mattress. I'm mostly a side-sleeper but I move around a bit. I think in a typical night I will spend a couple of hours on my back and the rest on my side. I tried all kinds of different positions on this mattress and whilst I was *mostly* comfortable there was just something that was never quite there for me, which is hard to explain. I tried it for a week, and I know they say you should try it for at least 30 days but a) That's the Amazon return window fully used up and b) After a few days I developed some pain in my lower back which I did not have before, but which has now gone away since returning the mattress and switching to a memory foam one.
My wife seemed to get on OK with it but she just said that it was "OK" and not "amazing" or anything like the adverts make you think.
One of the other selling points of the mattress from the ads is that it supposedly "sleeps cooler" meaning that you don't get as hot on the mattress as you can on memory foam. I never personally have felt too hot on memory foam but I do feel the extra warmth from the mattress as compared to a regular sprung bed without foam. In my opinion though the Purple mattress does NOT sleep any cooler than memory foam (and some other reviews seem to agree with me here).
In general, before you buy this I would strongly recommend looking at the (much larger number of reviews) from the American Amazon site - they are much more mixed than on the Canadian site. There are also lots of people in the Amazon.com reviews saying that the mattress degrades very quickly and "turns to mush" but I did not have the mattress long enough for this to happen.
Another thing you should know, is that if you do buy this mattress, don't like it, and want to return it, you have to package it up and arrange the return yourself - the only way to do this for free (I think) is to take it to a UPS store. Now, you remember I said how it comes rolled up and vacuum packed? It is VERY difficult to get it packaged up into a form that UPS will take again once it is unpacked the first time. I ended up buying a mattress bag from CanTire for about $15 which I was able to tape up enough to use as a vacuum bag. I vacuumed the air out which flattened the mattress, then rolled it up (NOT easy, even with two people) then used a whole roll of shrink-wrap/sellophane stuff and a whole roll of scotch tape to keep it in a roll shape and protect it from damage (note it's very unlikely you'll get it back into the original purple bag - I just wrapped / taped mine to the side of the mattress). If you don't vacuum bag it first then you have NO chance of rolling it up again. Then once you've done all this you have to get it to a UPS drop-off point - if you have a saloon car or similar (not a truck or a big SUV etc.) then this is pretty difficult. Basically it's big, bulky and HEAVY and if you're trying to do this on your own expect to be seriously worn out by the end of it.
In summary I would say don't buy into the hype, especially if one of your reasons for wanting this is that it sleeps cooler than memory foam. Apparently some people do like this mattress but it's not for me. On the plus side I believe they do donate any returns to homeless shelters etc.
