This is a book is written by Rick Warren that gives you false hope in your salvation. No where in this book does Rick talk about the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. If Jesus had not risen from the dead then He would be no different than the others who claim to be god. John 14:6 Jesus said I am the way, the truth, and the life and no one comes to the Father except thru Me.

Really disappointed, after purchasing the Kindle addition I only got 7 chapters. Nowhere on the cover or in the description area does it say this. If I had known I would have purchased a different version. This is what is written on the Amazon page "40 short chapters are intended to be read over 40 days' time, giving readers small pieces of his purpose-discovering program to chew on." Yip a little hard to do when you only have 7 chapters?

I won't give away any of the 40 day lessons, but I will say it's a great bible study and bonding experience and unravels many of the mysteries that hold us back from feeling joy, from being able to sustain meaningful relationships ... it's a great guide to embracing our purpose, feeling God's love and making meaningful connections. I mentioned this book in my women's ABF (a large group) and the majority were nodding their heads and singing it's praises. It's a great book for mentoring people new to the faith.

Doesn't matter what religious background you are or what beliefs you have. If you are troubled or looking for answers in life - this is a great book to help guide your way in the right direction. Already have one of these from long ago and my wife I currently reading mine. She loves it so much that she went and got one for her friend. Incredible boom and if you haven't read this yet, stop waiting or talking. Just purchase or borrow one from a friend and get reading one chapter per day, only 2 to 3 pages long per day. It'll be worth it. I'm a doctor, trust me.

This is a great booklet for sharing. Warren arranges the chapters by questions common to humanity and his progression is logical. One drawback--disappointed that the pronoun for God is never capitalized. Christians used to do this all the time, and we always should. God is not just another "he"; He is the Creator. When did Christians lose that mark of respect for the Lord?

A reviewer whose posts I like recommended this so I thought I'd give it a go. It's quite soothing and reassuring, though it seems to assume a belief in God. It would not convince atheists. I go along with its main tenets but it begs some questions. For example, we are told that God chose every feature of you including where you were born, your race, etc. Now if you were born white in a comfortable environment in California (or Cheshire), that's great. If you were born in a third world shanty town, and/or have a physical or mental defect, that's less happy. It had echoes of the Irish hymnographer's lines, "the rich man in his castle/ the poor man at his gate/ God made them high or lowly/ and ordered their estate."

The author, as a Protestant pastor, draws from the Bible for most of his sources. Fair enough, but I was also impressed by the quote from a high powered scientist in New Zealand, "hat the cosmos is a specifically designed whole, with life and mankind as its fundamental goal and purpose". That's a view with which many scientists I know concur. On the other hand, I get the impression (wrongly, I hope) that Pastor Rick is a young age creationist, which, of course, puts him at odds with science. In addition it seems he's anti-gay, which is a bit sad for those whom the Pastor presumably implies had their sexual orientation ordained by God.

But many of the things that the author writes are relatively non-contentious in Christian terms: good sermon material in mainstream churches. However, I found something odd about the book, a sort of Dale Carnegie flavour. OK, so Carnegie's books are still very much best sellers, and evangelical Christianity is doing well too, not least Rick Warren's church. But it's not to everyone's taste: I speak as a regular (fairly high) Anglican communicant. I suspect that I would not be entirely comfortable in the Pastor's Saddleback Church. It could be, too, that Rick Warren might feel a bit out of place at sung eucharist or Book of Common Prayer evensong in the parish church I go to. Each to his own.
