"Memorable characters, sharp plotting, and enough suspense for two books. What more could one possibly ask for?" (Bookreporter.com)

Gene Hackman is a household name as a result of his acting pursuits. The French Connection, The Conversation and No Way Out (watch that film again and you’ll be amazed at how he stole it right out from under Kevin Costner) are my favorites, and certainly you will have others. Hackman is retired from acting, but he definitely hasn’t retired, having co-written a number of historical novels and on his own penned a fine western, PAYBACK AT MORNING PEAK, in recent years. However, Hackman has not been getting his rightful due as an author. That may well change with his latest novel, which marks his first attempt at a modern thriller.

PURSUIT has some interesting echoes of the work of Elmore Leonard and Thomas Harris reverberating through it (not a bad echo to have, by any means), but Hackman most definitely has his own style. It passes my first and most important test when reading any book by a figure popular in another artistic medium: “Would this be a great book by Bob Smith?” Yes, indeed. I actually forgot that I was reading a book by that Gene Hackman by the time I had reached page 10.

The Leonard echo is Sergeant Julie Worth of the Missouri State Patrol. She’s not afraid to mix it up, whether it be with a nutcase shooting up a shopping mall or an ex-husband she cannot stand the sight of, and she’s not afraid of getting injured either, and repeatedly so. She keeps coming back, like Buford Pusser, though she is much better looking by all accounts. As for the Thomas Harris echo, that would come in the form of Charles Clegg, the monster who lives and works ever so quietly among us. Clegg is introduced within a vignette indicating that he has been doing what he does --- abduct, terrorize and murder women --- for a long time.

I first came across a novel by Mr. Hackman about Andersonville the hell hole of prisons during the civil war. Ever since I believe I read all his novels. This one "Pursuit" has to be one of the best murder/crime novel that I read in quite awhile...I think better than "Patterson" He is one multi-talented individual with no limits.

I downloaded this e-book to my Kindle fire from Amazon.com. The Author Gene Hackman did a good job writing this story. The story reminded me of a small version of Silence of the Lambs. The story had good character development. The scenes were well developed and it did take me there and I did get caught up in the story. I see that this Author does have writing talent and is very good but needs work. There were 3 typographical errors in the e-book version. The story line was not well developed. Some things were just missing. Suspense was missing I could see what was going to happen and the story played out exactly how I thought it would. Plot was missing, there was no reason or connection between the kidnapper and the character being kidnapped. There was no build up or Climax at all. The story just kind of unraveled in no particulate order. The Main character needed to go through the door with no turning back. She did not put anything like her job on the line. They just let her do what ever she wanted. They always gave in to her demands with no ramification for her actions. There were no spark's built into the story restating the title. I have and would recommend this e-book to a friend.

Another great book by one of the best actors of his generation, this one departs from the western theme to take place in modern times following a female police officer tracking down a criminal predator in a solid work that is completely believable. He does a good job with the details of police work, develops a solid plot, and creates realistic characters. A great read.

Have been a fan for many years - he is such an honest and wonderful actor - a great character actor! You might think with all the scripts he has read over the years, this would be where he is getting his stories, but after reading this story, I think he has taken to the road and done the research and then written the book. All of us who read "drama type books" have favorite authors and Gene Hackman is now one of my favorite authors - can't wait for the next book!

Gene Hackman is not just a good actor, he's also a good author! Each of his books have been completely different, and I like that! "Pursuit" is a nice curl up on the sofa and read away your day kind of book. Mr Hackman, keep them coming!!

i NEVER MISSED A gENE hACKMAN MOVIE & BELIEVE ME i MISS HIS ATTENDANCE ON THE SCREEN TODAY. However I was not fond of the book. It took too long to get started & to be honest I never completely finished it. A book has to grab my attention right away & I do not like so much description. Maybe a different one would be different.

ok, what can I say. I did like the book. While Gene Hackman is a terrific actor his writing skills is not quite up to his acting ability. But having said that, he is very new to writing and will, no doubt, get better with each endeavor. Plus, he did better than I could do! so I wasn't disappointed with this purchase and I did enjoy reading it.
