Editorial Reviews

Review

"The novel offers as much action adventure as it does romance, and soon Harry and Matt are fighting for their lives. Curtis doesn't shy away from emotion, and Matt's complex balance of grief and desire is deeply compelling, as is the military-grade mystery that keeps the story moving." The Washington Post

"I love a well researched, smart book. Emmy Curtis clearly has her research well in hand for this series. She takes us on military missions filled with so much detail, you can almost feel the sandy grit in your eyes as you read. The third book in her Alpha Ops series hits all of the high notes you need for an engaging military themed romantic suspense." Romance at Random

"I loved the characters. I loved the premise. I loved not knowing what was happening. I loved the story (...) If you enjoy a good romantic suspense that will keep you guessing about who to trust along with some pretty high heat, then this one needs to go on your list."  Stuck in Books

"The mysteries in the story are cleverly depicted with lots of clues, but nothing conclusive is exposed until just the right moment. There are a number of scenes where peril is looming, and the outcome is never assured until everything plays out. I was certainly stunned by some of the revelations, as the author cunningly developed an intriguing plot (...) PUSHING THE LIMIT is a gripping novel of dangerous escapades and heartfelt passion."  Single Titles

About the Author

Emmy Curtis is an editor and a romance writer. An ex-pat Brit, she quells her homesickness with Cadbury Flakes and Fray Bentos pies. She's lived in London, Paris and New York, and has settled for the time being, in North Carolina. When not writing, Emmy loves to travel with her military husband and take long walks with their Lab. All things considered, her life is chock full of hoot, just a little bit of nanny. And if you get that reference...well, she already considers you kin.

Henrietta (Harry) and Matt are two people who have been grieving for a long time. Matt left the job he loved and the adrenaline he craved to join a noble cause. Harry have herself over to taking pleasure where she could find it but keeping her emotions locked fiercely away. When a chance encounter ignites a burning passion, the two become connected and yet walk away. Months later, they meet again by chance on a work related project. The chemistry is still there ready to erupt. It is only after they give in that they discover their grief is shared over the same person. That discovery threatens every connection they've made. As the archeological site they are jointly working becomes threatened, Matt tries to avoid any connection to Harry but remains determined to keep her safe. Harry is pretty determined to keep herself safe. Together, they work to protect a foreign treasure and discover whether there can ever be anything more than friendship between them.

I enjoyed the story and the characters. I will absolutely be waiting for the next book in this series.

The perfect mix of adventures action and heartrendingly beautiful romance!
From the sizzling hot first encounter, to the scorching fire in the second, Henrietta and Matt are not only attracted to each other, they find a special connection. When the common denominator in both of their past comes to the light, it seems like all the odds are against them ever finding happily ever after with each other. The love, romance, between Henrietta and Matt is touching, sometimes even agonizing, and most of the time sexy. With the sorrow of the past, it's shadows in the present it is a powerful, real, fresh, and emotional roll-a-coaster ride.
While Henrietta and Matt are trying to face the ghost of the past, they also have to solve a mystery, that intrigues many. They have to find out, who are the real allays, and who are they fighting against for - but also what are they fighting against for.
The mystery is mesmerizing, more and more secrets are coming to light, and twists coming to play, that makes them wonder if they can trust anyone anymore.
While the story is unfolding, there are also many interesting tidbits of information about the Iraq culture and habits, cuisine included.
Also, different forms of PTSD symptoms, origins, and what can trigger an attack are part of the story, that, as I have mentioned in previous reviews, in my opinion, is great and commendable addition to many military stories these days.
I truly enjoyed this story in every aspect, and can recommend it highly

Harry and Matt meet at a friend's wedding and have the best almost sex of their lives. Then never see each other again. Harry is an archaeologist and Matt is in the military and works for JPAC(they find and locate troop's bodies and bring them home). Matt used to be EOD(Explosive Ordinance Disposal)but after what happened to his best friend Danny he transferred to JPAC. When Harry finds a military plane part at one of her digs and Matt comes to investigate. They are throw together again. When all the secrets are revealed will Matt and Harry has a chance to find out if they have just a sexual attraction or could it be something more?

Matt is really messed up after watching his best friend get blown into pieces in front of him 7 years ago. I can't begin to imagine having to watch your best friend die in front of you. It is very understandable that Matt is still really messed up. I loved Matt. He has a lot of scars but he is brave, caring, and trustworthy. But he doesn't trust easily but I wouldn't either after what he saw at war. Harry is a great heroine. I loved how she never let anyone boss her around and how independent she is. After the death of her husband Harry never wants to risk her heart again and I can understand that.

I liked how Harry had a friendship with some of the local Iraq people. All the little details the author put in this book made it so real. The prayer mats facing Mecca, how Matt's training made him more suspicious of everyone, the parts of the houses only women could enter, and other small things that made the story come to life in a different country. I also enjoyed all the military jargon.

I really, really wanted this book.

You know how sometimes when you want something really, really badly, and it doesn't quite turn out how you envisioned it? This was kind of like that. Do not get me wrong -- it was a good read, a great story, it had lovely characters... I just found it a bit choppy at times. Matt ran hot and cold throughout the beginning, but so did Harry. However, when I think of archaeologists, I think of Brennan from Bones, so I gave her a bit of leeway in my opinion of her.

About 60% through, though, I became completely engrossed -- as in, don't/can't put the book down engrossed. That is, after all, where the brunt of the action was. And because of the lengthiness of the story, I hardly minded that the whirlwind of a semi-non-romance was truly only a span of a few days. Some people have reviewed the book and stated that the lack of sex/romance and the high amount of action/dig are what turned them away from this book... I actually appreciated it more.

Harry and Matt had already gotten to the down and dirty of everything in OVER THE LINE -- I appreciated that their relationship, after that point, wasn't about sex. It was more about each of them sorting their feelings for one another currently, and how they could live with their pasts and make way for the future. That said, I do feel that I am rating this book a bit harsher than I have the novella and book 1.

... I will likely (ok, so I will, no question) revisit this book when I have some downtime. Emmy has yet to disappoint me -- so Matt and Harry aren't my two favorites in the series; there are worse things. You can't love all of the characters :)
