Quiet and Fearless

A superb book about old time submariners who apparently were fearless. If how a middle class guy goes to the Naval Academy and ends up doing great and noble things in the military interests you, then this is a very good read.

Disclaimer, I had a hand in this work, so understand I am a bit biased.

V Adm. A R McCann was an under-known man of significance. A very modest man he was an engineer, and leader of men. When I first started doing research on Admiral McCann I was drawn to understand that there were incredible stories behind his name. What little could be found about him in publications was a "hint of what lies below the surface". My research interests were personal,because I was looking for my father's birth father, and he was a candidate. So I endeavored to track him and see if he fit. I started to compile a timeline of his whereabouts and looked for mention of his name in biographies and archives. What I found astounded me. The word that came to mind was "wow". The obvious thing was the McCann Submarine Rescue Chamber he developed with Swede Momsen and others. But that wasn't the first time his name came up in Submarine rescues. He stood out from a crowd, in his dress whites, at the rescue of the Submarine 0-5, off the coast of Panama, in 1923, He came to world renown when his rescue chamber was used in 1939 to rescue the survivors on the Squalus. He was a squadron commander of Submarines in Pearl Harbor, on that fateful day. He was an arctic explorer, He eventually became the Navy Inspector General. And when he retired in 1950, he simply disappeared quietly into Winter Haven Florida, and was seldom seen in the news. There is MUCH more to this man and his story. If you have any interest in the US Navy in WWII, and like a good read, then this is a MUST read, Not because I have contributed, but because Carl LaVo can really put it together and tell the story, in a entertaining way. Because A R McCann left little behind of his own story, this book depends on the STORY of what happened around him, and the real star is the way history pivoted around him, and didn't make him famous. He simply did what had to be done, quietly, efficiently, and moved on to the NEXT job. Not any different than the rest of us.
