Editorial Reviews

Leading off with a string-soaked rendition of that Screamin' Jay Hawkins title classic, this 1965 Mercury LP is a Nina Simone pop perfection. Also here: Gimme Some; Feeling Good; One September Day; Take Care of Business , and more.

Nina Simone can be considered an acquired taste--like black coffee, fine brandy, or good cigars. With a voice that's less than perfect, she's nevertheless full of passion and pain, joy and raunchiness in her music. This album covers all those emotions set against the background her of well-arranged orchestration and her exceptional skill as a pianist.

Nina is a genre all her own. Her style varies broadly--from blues to jazz to gospel to folk and political music. This album is not a showcase that variety, merely one facet of it. This album has more of a fun feel to it than some of her other recordings--with songs like 'Marriage is for Old Folks' and 'Gimme Some' as well as the child-like 'Beautiful Land.' Nina is certainly no idealist, though, showing her passion and her pain in songs like 'Ne Me Quitte Pas' and 'You've Got to Learn.'

For Nina fans, this album is a nice break away from some of her moodier, darker work. For those just discovering Nina, this album would be an excellent way to ease into acquiring the taste for her music--splashing a little cream into one's black coffee, as it were.

As a dedicated fan of Nina's musical uniqueness, I've found this to be a very pleasant album that's just right for lifting the stresses of day away and losing myself in a little bit of fun.

One thing that sets artists like Nina Simone apart is their overwhelming sense of identity on everything they do. This is an album that, I admit shallowly, I bought for only two songs on it, not being familiar with the other songs. Listening to the whole album though it's obvious why Nina has been so active and so popular for so long. Each song is it's own style and vibe but it's all so Nina in essence that if you like her artistry, you'll love it from top to bottom. I really enjoyed this album. Standouts being "I put a spell on you" and "Feeling Good" two personal favorites.

My husband has been looking for this album, at a reasonable price, for quite some time. The older vinyl can go into the hundreds. He was so excited to see the vinyl was getting re released. We pre ordered the album and he had to play it right away! He loves Nina Simone!

One of her most pop-oriented albums, but also one of her best and most consistent. Most of the songs feature dramatic, swinging large-band orchestration, with the accent on the brass and strings. Simone didn't write any of the material, turning to popular European songsmiths Charles Aznavour, Jacques Brel, and Anthony Newley, as well as her husband, Andy Stroud, and her guitarist, Rudy Stevenson, for bluesier fare. There are really fine tunes and interpretations, on which Simone gives an edge to the potentially fey pop songs, taking a sudden (but not uncharacteristic) break for a straight jazz instrumental with "Blues on Purpose." The title track, a jazzy string ballad version of the Screamin' Jay Hawkins classic, gave the Beatles the inspiration for the phrasing on the bridge of "Michelle."

Just played brand new Import LP from Amazon seller Import Cd's and It sounds fabulous. Try to find an original copy of I put a Spell On you In good playable condition and you're looking at $100.00 or more because of scarcity,(Only re-pressed In Japan 1970's), I am so happy UMG UK decided to release this again on 180gram vinyl. I don't know the source of the remaster but suspect digital was used. However compared with the CD this new vinyl blows It away sound-wise. The CD although not bad has a forward sharpness to it whereas the LP just sounds like music and gets out of the way letting me enjoy what I'm listening to. That's the sign of a well remastered LP. A must have recommendation.

The CD "I Put A Spell On You" is my personal favorite by Nina Simone due to its tremendous versatility. While "Colors Of the Rainbow" is as gentle and beautiful enough to be played to pre-school or kindergarten students, "Gimme Some" is Nina at her rowdiest, sexiest best. While "One September Morn" imparts sentimental beauty and sweetness, "You've Got to Learn" provides a driving primer in perseverence and emotional survival. Nina's version of the title song was the first I heard. It has helped me appreciate earlier ones. I love this collection.

I had always heard the song "I Put A Spell On You" by Nina Simone, but I had never owned one of her albums before,; I bought this one when I saw it for that one song - but ended up enjoying the entire CD. I am very pleased with it. Thank You

Recently bought this album by curiosity because my Mother owned a copy in her music collection. May I say I was blown away by the delivery of the songs by Nina Simone. These are not Girlie Girl lyrics, nor is the singer a Girlie Girl. These are songs sung by a Strong Woman, Period.
