Before I install my replacement I plan to either change the Bussmann fuse and holder to a waterproof Mini Blade or completely seal it or encase it in silicone or some kind of marine tool rubber. I was a little surprised that the fuse was not completely sealed. I didn't think much of it when I installed it but having to try and field diagnose the issue when I could not find a break in the lens left me with points of entry from the wires. I could see inside the lens where the wires entered to the LEDs it was brown and the wires appeared corroded.
The only two ways I could come up with for water wicking into the terminal point on the LEDs was for it to go in where all the wires enter at either "A" water tight seal or "B" the fuse connector as it was a twist lock style with springs for a Bussmann Fuse. There was dirt and corrosion on the points of contact for the fuse so it lead me to believe that water or this winter salt water and or the road deicer saline or salt based liquids could have seeped or wicked into the fuse and crept up the wire into the points of contact for the LEDs. I believe this because where the wires terminate on each end of the fuse to a small cap they were showing signs of white corrosion so either the metals were reacting to each other or a substance like water or salt was also present.
I may just coat the ends with rtv waterproof automotive to RV silicone as well as the Bussmann fuse and or dip the fuse in a liquid wire coat rubber seal like liquid electrical tape.
Now I know I must seal every seam and potential opening to avoid future issues. I have improved my rating from 1 to 3 only because of the great customer care from Nancy at Putco. I could almost go 4 but for having to replace it in 12 months and to come up with my own ways to solve for the issues I am sticking with 3.
I hope they look at this e-mail and do some additional testing on the two areas I looked at and for the types of road chemicals used in areas that see below zero temperatures and where salt spray verses water could be a seasonal hazard to the Bussmann twist lock fuse they are using. No wire is wick free but having the fuse so close to the point of entry to the 60" strip I think was a mistake.
Purchased on January 31st 2014 From Amazon Prime, was working great, I loved the look and felt it was a good purchase for $100. As of February 2015 about 60% of the LEDs are out and the right directions does not function. I live in New England and we have record snow and cold this winter. I was fine all spring, summer, and fall. I am contacting Putco to see if they will honor the 2 year warranty and replace it. I will keep you posted, but not even a full 12 months for a $100 light bar is a little crazy. If they replace it I will change my rate, but I can not change my disappointment In the time of year I need it most being a snowy winter with a White F350 Crew Cab it completely failed and I need to crawl under my truck to disconnect it. Could be the cold or maybe the plastic housing to keep out the weather was not as good as I thought it would be. I purchased this based on the reviews and it looked to be a high quality product.
1) forget the tape provided and get some 3M Double sided tape. You will want to verify the turn signal directions prior to mounting with this tape. Pretty difficult to remove after using this tape.
***UPDATE*** Forget tape at all and use the plastic mounts. Yeah you have to drill but way more reliable.
2) Use dielectric grease on the 4 pin connectors
3) Some people frown on Scotchlok taps but I like them. It made tapping the reverse wire very easy. Then some liquid electrical tape and it's all set.
4) On my 2005 Dodge Ram 2500 Diesel the reverse wire was the white with green stripe in the wire loom connecting to the 7 pin trailer plug. This will of course vary by model.
We installed the light bar on the truck, and was pretty disappointed in just how few red leds there are, and also disappointed in that they don't seem as bright as they could be. The white (reverse) leds are pretty bright though, and really stand out compared to the backup lights on the truck. The only reason we left the light bar on the truck is because of the added safety the white (reverse) leds provide. The turn and stop function just doesn't have enough leds or is bright enough to warrant the $100 we paid for the light bar.
If you are not as concerned with having white (reverse) led lighting on a tailgate light bar, you are much better off purchasing the 60" reactor light bar from custom dynamics, which I have on my truck. It has over 150 leds (75 per side) and is amazingly bright. In fact the running light function on the bar is brighter than the stop function on the putco bar. You can check out the pics and video on the custom dynamics web site and see for yourself. The Reactor Truck Tailgate LED Light Bar from Custom Dynamics is significantly brighter, and I believe a better buy.
The Putco 90009-60 LED Tailgate Light Bar with Turn Signal Function is just OK, and the only real plus is the reverse light function.
