According to Prof Alexander Dugin, Vladimir Putin stands at a crossroads. Throughout his career as the President of Russia, Putin has attempted to balance two opposing sides of his political nature: one side is a liberal democrat who seeks to adopt Western-style reforms in Russia and maintain good relations with the United States and Europe, and the other is a Russian patriot who wishes to preserve Russia's traditions and reassert her role as one of the great powers of the world. According to Dugin, this balancing act cannot go on if Putin wishes to enjoy continuing popular support among the Russian people. Putin must act to preserve Russia's unique identity and sovereignty in the face of increasing challenges, both from Russian liberals at home and from foreign powers. Russia is no longer strong enough to stand on her own, he writes. In order to do this, Russia must cooperate with other dissenting powers who oppose the new globalist order of liberalism to bring about a multipolar world, in which no single nation wields supreme power, but rather several major powers keep each other in balance. Russia is crucial to this effort, in Dugin's view, and indeed, its own survival as a unique and independent civilisation is dependent on a geopolitical shift away from the unipolar world represented by America's unchecked supremacy. This fascinating book, written by an informal advisor to Putin and a Kremlin insider, is the first of its kind in English. Alexander Dugin (b. 1962) is one of the best-known writers and political commentators in post-Soviet Russia, having been active in politics there since the 1980s. In addition to the many books he has authored on political, philosophical, and spiritual topics, he is currently a professor in the Department of Sociology at Moscow State University, and is the intellectual leader of the Eurasia Movement, which he founded. For more than a decade, he has also been an advisor to Vladimir Putin and others in the Kremlin on geopolitical matters, being a vocal advocate of a return of Russian power to the global stage to act as a counterweight to American hegemony. Arktos published his book, The Fourth Political Theory, in 2012.

Vladimir Putin is an enigmatic figure, infinitely more complex than both his Russophobic detractors or his weird cultists in the West (on the Alt-Right) are willing to admit. That makes the job that Dugin sets for himself in this book nigh-on impossible.

Fortunately, Dugin does not spend much time on trying to un-riddle Putin himself or his personal philosophy. Since he views Putin as a pragmatist who must balance a host of issues and concerns, the man he writes about really doesn't have much time for something as solipsistic as philosophy. He has to make life-and-death decisions on a daily basis.

The book makes a plausible argument that Putin was put in power by oligarchs to "dog whistle" as we say in the West, about patriotism to the Russian masses while continuing the privatization/capitalistic bonanza that got underway during the Yeltsin years. Putin played along for awhile, but eventually started imprisoning or banishing some oligarchs while empowering others, based on whether or not he felt they were willing to actually help him in his mission. That mission is to build a Eurasian common zone, a bulwark against further Western incursions or expansion into Russia's sphere of influence. Dugin doesn't view this so much as an imperial strategy, but a realpolitik necessity, since (to paraphrase an old saying) Russia can either be great or Russia will not be at all. In other words, Russia can either acquiesce to neoconservative and neoliberal expansion (now creeping through the Ukraine) or it can create its own counter-empire.

I don't always agree with Dugin, and sometimes find his endless references to his own works a bit wearing and narcissistic, but this book is a good countering tonic to the kind of drive-by picture we get of Putin in the West, as some sort of fascist KGB spook who has designs on destroying the world or feeding homosexuals to his German shepherds while having Ouija board seances with the ghost of Rasputin. This shrill, alarmist rhetoric has of course only grown worse since Donald Trump took office, which makes this book even more essential reading for Americans who want a thorough (but far from even-handed) understanding of where Russia may be headed, and where the world might be going as well.

The alternative is to foment World War III in the name of some liberal bromides about tolerance and democracy. Recommended.

If you are already versed in the Conservative Revolution of the inter - war years, Perennial Traditionalism, Eurasianism, Fourth Political Theory, Third Position and other manifestations of "right wing" thought which have little or nothing to with the old school European Counter Revolution and, certainly, nothing to do with American Republican-Conservatism you will enjoy this, often dense, book. It would also be helpful to know a bit about Russian National Bolshevik tendencies for the author assumes our familiarity with all the above. For the non - initiate this may be a daunting read but well worth it, especially for the Atlantic Community rightist who is intereted in life beyond the neo (and for that matter even paleo) cons.

A really interesting book in order to know how Putin really thinks

This is an excellent book that shows how really Putin thinks. We all know Alexander Dugin is the great mastermind in Putin's government. Even if someone doesn't share Putin's policy and foreign affairs, this book is a great resource in order to know how the new Russia is spreading out her circle of influence throughout the world. The basis of Putin's mind is the Erusarian-Empire Project. No one better than Alexander Dugin to lead you in Putin's way of thinking and his resolving-problem strategy.

An insiders view of Russian geopolitical agenda

A very good presentation of the Eurasian case in geopolitics, and some very interesting notes on differences between the Russian political machinery (no think-tanks or major ideological differences for an example) compared to the political culture in the West, altough I object to putting any politician, including the great Vladimir Putin, on a pledestal.

I really enjoied to have a total different look at Putin, than our western media offer.
Dugin does not glorify Putin, but he shows where his strenght and where his weakness lies.

If you are interested in Russian politics, you should read this book!
