Putin's Gambit: A Novel Kindle Edition

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 216 ratings

From TV broadcaster Lou Dobbs and award-winning author James O. Born comes Putin's Gambit, an international financial thriller about a KGB plot to use a series of terrorist attacks as cover for a Russian military incursion into Estonia.

Adjusting to civilian life has not been easy for former Marine Derek Walsh. As he navigates a brutal job on Wall Street and a challenging romance, he wonders if he could be doing more with his life. When an inexplicable $200 million dollar money transfer is made on his computer, he is thrust into the world of international terror, and the global economy is knocked off its hinges.

On the other side of the Atlantic, a dangerous alliance has formed. Radical Islamists and Russian extremists have set the wheels in motion for Russia to assert its power in Europe. The US President has proven to be weak on foreign policy, the military is stretched too thin, and Vladimir Putin judges this to be the time for Russia to regain its Soviet Empire. Troops mass on the Estonian border, waiting for the order to move.

The FBI believes Walsh was involved in the money transfer, and a group of Russians are intent on killing him. As New Yorkers are outraged upon learning of the illegal money transfer, and the world economy crashes after a series of terrorist attacks, Walsh and his Marine buddies are the only ones that can keep the world from spinning off its axis.

Relax, it is only a novel. Yet, the Russian army is on the eastern border of Estonia and Putin has not been shy about wanting to expand borders to include those countries of the former Soviet Union. Russia has proven resources in cyber warfare and is capable in causing disturbances in markets and countries. With weakness in American resolve to contain the Russians and NATOs slow degradation from a fighting force, is it possible that Putin might consider taking a degree of risk, that is calculated, to gain an advantage over America and Europe?

Putin’s Gambit is the second co-authored novel by Lou Dobbs and James O. Born. The plot is realistic and timely. At the center of this plot are four U.S. Marines, of which one remains on active duty in Germany. They all served together as officers in the Middle East and remain good friends. Derek Walsh is a trader with a large Wall Street firm. It was his computer that transferred $200 million to an account in Switzerland, from which several transfers were made to terrorist organizations. Derek, however, did not make the transfers, but is accused.

Riots start to occur throughout America, England and Europe. Orchestrated riots, funded by someone, similar to the ones financed by George Soros in Ferguson. This was an enjoyable read, especially with surprises in the end. The character Derek Walsh was a little hard to take. He kept finding himself in difficult situations, which was a little hard to believe, as well as if he would have worked with the FBI in the beginning, a lot of trial and tribulation could have been avoided, although that would have meant a shorter novel.

With all the riots and concerns related to the illegal wire transfer, would America take its eye off the ball and allow Putin to get away with taking another country as he did with Crimea? Note that the American Administration mentioned in the story, is not the current one. Plus, there are some discrete political messages blended in the story as well.

Tough to put Putin's Gambit down, eerily relevant to the world today. Because the chapters are rather short (8-15 pages) you want to keep reading; thinking, "I'll just read one more chapter."
The authors keep throwing characters at you, and interweave their stories seamlessly. Although I found I struggled in the first 6-8 chapters remembering their characteristics, it moves so fast, which becomes helpful keeping the players straight further into the story. The novel is full of all types of human's, hero's and those who you wouldn't want to meet in a dark alley, but the conclusion to this spy intrigue leaves a few loose ends which would set the stage for their "next book"....maybe?

Great reading. Story is fiction, but based on history and facts regarding Putin and the Soviet Union. I couldn't put it down as it got very intense towards the end of the book. I bought this book for my husband, but I started reading it and he had to wait. Great job of writing by Dobbs and Born.

The authors' backgrounds in finance and law enforcement inform a stunning, credible strategy for Putin's disruption of the West and Hitler-style land grabs with fact-based details on his desire to forge a new Russian Empire through cyberwarfare, propaganda, sleeper agents and finally military conquest. The fast-moving story unfolds from the vantage points of three former Marines swept up in Putin's grand strategy, one framed for an act of cyberterrorism and the others struggling to save him. Wait for the author's body-count of Putin's actual targeted assassinations to further his career by eliminating political opponents, journalists, reformers, and whistle-blowers and you'll see the real-world Bond villain who will probably succeed in rebuilding a Russian bloc mightier than the old Soviet Union, now that he's enabled by a U.S. President who holds his authoritarian powers in awe and won't oppose his conquests.

I like Lou, but the bouncing around from scene to scene-leaving one scene at the height of action to something else, was a little annoying. And...the folly of two authors not on the same page (no pun intended) was evident;
He also knew Alena’s apartment phone number, but not her cell phone number. And several pages later:
Walsh used the Boost phone he had bought at Mike Rosenberg’s suggestion to call her cell phone and left a message. He didn’t bother to leave a message on her home phone.

And as far as combat with Russian troops...was that the end of it? No fallout? Terror attacks, financial attacks, tank battles? That's war folks.
