"Timely exposé of Russia’s vast disinformation campaign from a Finnish journalist persecuted for her persistent reporting of its brazen abuses...a damning portrait of Putin and his autocratic, manipulative regime."—Kirkus

“Jessikka Aro has written a frightening and fascinating book, chronicling Russian information warfare in irrefutable detail. Exposing Putin’s trolls is dangerous, vital, and ultimately heroic work.”—Anne-Marie Slaughter

“By exposing Putin’s institutionalized trolling operations Jessikka Aro has gone where no one has had the courage to go before and has done so at great peril. Ms. Aro has done the world a huge service by showing us how these tactics work so we can better defend ourselves going forward.”—Bill Browder

"An important book for those who want to understand the complex and confusing ways reality is manufactured in the digital era. Aro's story shines a bright light on the dark world of online information manipulation operations that can upend the lives of individuals and the health of democracies."—Liz Wahl

A chilling account of Russian information warfare, Putin's Trolls exposes the individuals and organizations behind the Kremlin’s coordinated, military-style social media operations against the West.

In this courageous and unflinching book, award-winning journalist Jessikka Aro interweaves her own dramatic story as a target of Russian social media propaganda with accounts from many internationally known critics of the Kremlin, who share their own stories of being targeted by Russia’s multifaceted cyber warfare campaigns. As Jessikka began to investigate the impact of the Kremlin’s troll operations outside of Russia, she learned that private citizens in many other countries were being victimized by Kremlin-designed information campaigns. These actions were frequently conducted through an organized “troll factory” led by Russia’s security and intelligence apparatus, using unregulated social media platforms including YouTube, Facebook and Twitter. Many of the disinformation campaigns were centered around the 2014 Russian invasion of Ukraine and subsequent occupation of the Crimean Peninsula.

Editorial Reviews

About the Author

Jessikka Aro is an award-winning investigative reporter with Yle, the Finnish Broadcasting Company, specializing in Russia, extremism and information warfare. Due to her investigations of pro-Kremlin social media trolls and their influence on public debates outside Russia's borders, she became the target of an international propaganda and hate speech campaign. In 2019, the US State Department awarded her the International Women of Courage Award, but the award was mysteriously rescinded by the Trump administration allegedly due to her social media criticism of President Trump.

This is one of those books that are so hard to read - by no means not because of the professional journalistic approach, but because every chapter makes you feel viscerally ill to realise that all Jessikka Aro is reporting has been going on for decades under our very noses. Coming from a small border town in Finland; Russia, or earlier Soviet Union, always loomed in my consciousness as a dark and menacing force Finns had to deal with, but after fall of the Iron Curtain it felt less immediately threatening. Little did I know that with the rise of social media the influence would change from political and public print/TV media sphere - where it felt relatively easy to spot or dismiss as typical 'telling us what to do in our own country', to infiltrating into social networks under our very noses. Case study after another along with Aro's own harrowing story of systematic persecution of her personally for daring to speak out exposes Putin regime's pernicious influence across Europe all the way across Atlantic. Anyone daring to criticize Kremlin's agenda would find themselves being discredited, defamed and threatened with clear aim to make them silent.
Putin's Trolls is a must read especially in the light of current, destructive war Russia is waging in Ukraine. It also serves as a backdrop to understanding how, and by whom we have been invidiously manipulated to allow resentment, discrimination and totalitarian regime reign in social networks and from there, weaponizing opinions, spilling into the streets. Putin's Trolls describes how Putin's Russia has been at war with the West for decades, we just have not been aware of it.

Yle investigative journalist Jessikka Aro’s book is a stunning, sweeping, well-researched, and timely exposé on Putin’s Russia and their attempts to use almost every dirty trick available to subdue, undermine, and threaten Putin’s enemies—the free-speaking and free-thinking peoples of the world. Her book is both sweeping and deeply personal, showing how she herself was targeted by Russian trolls as she carried out her work of understanding the Russian disinformation and malign influence ecosystem. She then expertly ties in Putin’s moves to Russian aspirations of economic, political, and even military hegemony over its neighbors and adversaries abroad, and shows how Putin’s moves led to the current tragedy in Ukraine—despite the fact that this book was originally published in 2018. I cannot give this book enough praise—or stars, for that matter! So ignore the troll comments, buy this book, and tell your friends and family about it. You’ll be glad you did.

Anyone with access to social media should read this book to understand the malicious currents at play online.
Reviewed in the United States on October 18, 2022
This is an important book about a subject the US media has completely ignored. Russia is so far ahead of the Western world in 'information warfare' it's shocking, as is the ease and success at which they manipulate their citizens. Everyone should read this book! The one 'but' was the Ms Aro's repetition of favorite left-wing criticisms of Donald Trump. She had told of the horrible experience she had in her native Norway with harassment and threats from Russian trolls actually forcing her to leave her own country, and about the great danger they pose all over the world. To go from a serious geopolitical threat to petty political name calling about Trump was jarring, and unnecessary to the point of the book, I don't think it matters how you might feel about him, it just didn't fit. I would have given it five stars if not for that.

Jessikka Aro's career as a journalist illustrates how costly reporting the truth can be. The Kremlin's agents have been unrelenting in their attacks on her -- attacks that are based on lies designed to strengthen other lies. Despite this, Ms. Aro continues her work. "Putin's Trolls" underscores the fragility of "free speech" when it is subjected to barrages of falsehood, and therefore it is essential reading for anyone interested in information warfare as embraced by Russia and other countries.

The author spends as much time stroking her own ego as she does describing the information war her book ostensibly covers. I couldn’t bring myself to slog through the self-aggrandizement. Disappointing as I was looking forward to this read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Descent book about the Kremlins dirty work
Reviewed in Germany on November 27, 2022
I agree with her objective and also very interesting insights about Russia, the Kremlin and Putin but unfortunately much of the rest isn't quite as objective and often comes off like political propaganda. It sometimes seems like the Kremlin isnt the only one that uses the 60/40 tactic..

5.0 out of 5 stars Insightful and thrilling read

I've been waiting for a while for this book to come out in English, and it's not a disappointment. The account given by Jessikka Aro of Putin’s troll factory (Internet Research Agency) in Olgino is both highly personal at times, but also very effective at exploring the mechanisms and practices of Putin’s propaganda machine. Jessikka has taken the brave decision to exposure this story to the world, at great personal risk and despite vicious attacks on her character and professionalism, orchestrated by an army of online trolls, and useful idiots. The author has exposed the ruthless way in which lies, and propaganda are amplified online to spread apathy and distraction, as well as to propagate hate and terror, in the pursuit of Russia’s strategic goals. This book couldn’t come at a more opportune moment, as the world is waking up to the threat that comes when propaganda is combined with a militaristic regime, to brainwash its own population, and attack the populations of its opponents. The book is so packed with detail, that it’ll demand a second and third reading…

If you didn't know Putin has been at war with the West for the decade via misinformation, this book will open your eyes.

If you did know, it's still interesting because there are bound to be bits that are new to you.

It all feels a tad naive really. But then the author's wide-eyed amazent at the bleedin' obvious has a certain charm. It's a good introduction.

Either way, everyone needs to know the stuff in this book, although where they get it hardly matters
