The highest possible praise I can give this book is that it's provided a fantastic way to spend some quality time with my 9-year-old son. Reading together is a nightly bedtime ritual, but lately I've substituted a puzzlesnack instead. I do little more than hold the pencil and direct his attention, and he supplies all the answers. Occasionally there's a word or fact that's outside his experience, and I'll step in if the puzzle doesn't offer another angle of attack. But 95+% of the solving is all his. My pride in him as I discover surprising depths to his vocabulary is at least matched by his own pride at his success and accomplishment. He's eager to do each new puzzle, and the little AHA moments as he figures out an answer are delightful to experience.
Would give it a 5th star if it were spiral-bound (come on, publishers-- books you're intended to write in shouldn't be perfect-bound).
However, after having gone through about a quarter of the puzzles so far (in order), I have to say the difficulty is not challenging at all if you're past beginner level. At least half the fun (for me) of solving these kind of puzzles is having to work at them, and I haven't had to struggle for a single answer yet. It's been like filling out a form; the entertainment level is definitely ho-hum. If, after finishing the book, my experience changes, I will amend this review, but I don't hold out much hope, based on other reviews.
