As for the quality of the upscale for retro gamers, I can't really recommend this. I'll only be using this in places where I wouldn't have my current setup and just needed to get a system connected to HDMI, or as a hold-over until I can get a larger SCART switch. The device introduces too many artifacts to the game graphics during upscaling. I used a benchmarking ROM on the Genesis to verify: it affects the transparency and drop shadow effects, causes rainbow colors in certain black and white crosshatch patterns, and introduces a significant amount of ringing. This is particularly noticeable on RPG text. In Brain Lord for SNES, certain words are highlighted in the text. With this device, the blue of the windows crowds in on the highlighted text. The ringing on the highlighted words makes it harder to read and makes the words appear less bold than they should.
An interesting positive note is that it somehow seemed to eliminate the vertical bars I normally saw on the Genesis with certain colors in the color bar benchmark. The color gradient was smooth with this device.
Not that this device claimed to do anything about this problem, or that it would be possible for it to, but in case you were curious: the device also does nothing to remove the audio buzz from the SNES while displaying images of high contrast (usually in RPGS when text windows are displayed).
I read some complaints about the quality that may be actually true, but I think it does a great job for its value. In my case, I just wanted to plug an old Amiga 600 PAL computer to a modern Japanese TV. Because the Japanese TV doesn't understand PAL signal, all I got was gray color and awful flickering, due to the different frequency. Moreover, Japanese TVs don't have SCART/Euroconnector input, so even if the TV accepted PAL input, I would be limited to video-composite's low quality. Thanks to this product I can see now my old Amiga computer in color and with a sharp image.
If you can already plug your old computer or console directly to your TV, probably you'll get a better image by plugging it that way than using this upscaler. But if you are in a situation like mine, this is probably the best option you'll find.
