Another observation which was to be expected for the price of the unit was the connectors. Although, not the worst I have seen they are certainly not the best either. I feel that a couple good knocks or a drop could break or chip them if you were not careful. However, they are acceptable and do the job. I proceeded to test the unit by doing a battery check which is all the way to the far right of the dial. I personally would have liked to see it on the first click with maybe a different color LED so you would not have to turn the knob through all the positions to check the battery and then back to test a cable. If it were in the first position of the switch you would get a battery test each time before you tested a cable, and this could save time especially if you were testing many cables throughout the day.
After my first test which I purposely created a couple of faulty cables such as tip-grounded, shield lifted, tip, ring, sleeve swapped and so on, the unit performed well and gave me the correct indication on the LED's. The black and red banana jacks are a nice addition which is used for continuity tests with a beep and LED, but it would have been a big plus if they were to include a set of test leads with maybe alligator clips or something like that. For me that was not a big deal because I have lot's of lead sets but for others, they may not. The unit has just about every common audio connection used and seems to be a worthy addition to your toolkit. If you are in the audio business and need a unit to quickly test your cables then this PCT40 unit should provide all you need. The unit is a little bigger than lets say a standard size multimeter but not to bad, it would definitely fit inside you tool-box or duffle back when out in the field. I would recommend this product.
- Build Quality of Case
- Vast array of connections
- Bright LED's
- Continuity Tester
- Well labeled
- Average Quality Connectors
- Battery Check to far right (It's my personal preference)
- No test leads for Continuity Check
I give it four stars, because it meets about 80% of my requirements.
Once you get the cover off the battery compartment, you won't find the classic snap-on 9-volt battery pad with four inches of wire. It's a snap-in plastic box. It's not terribly hard to stuff the battery in, but I have to wonder what it'll be like getting the battery out.
As far as basic functionality, the one I got seems to work fine. Shorts in TS cables (guitar cable, unbalanced instrument cable) show up as a third yellow LED, as if there were a RING conductor. I'm not sure what a TRS-TRS short would look like.
