Ours exploded in the kitchen cabinet in the middle of the night. We had't used it for a few days. It just made a huge bang and we wondering what the heck was that. Upon searching and opening up every drawer and cabinet at 1 am, we found a million tiny pieces of shard glass in the cabinet, shelf and door! It was terrible. Cleaning it up was a chore since some of the glass shards were impeded into the back of the cabinet door, side walls and top.
I went online and there are numerous reports of the same Pyrex glass exploding.
If you have an old, originally made by Corning, then that is OK. The new ones made byWorld Kitchen since 1998 are just a hazard.
Original review: I have two measuring cups of this size that I use all the time as bowls. This Pyrex one is more convenient and cheaper than the Anchor Hocking. The glass is thinner and the handle is open at the bottom. That means that the measuring cup is much less heavy than the AH, and you can put one inside another. The AH brand has much thicker glass, which makes it MUCH heavier, and its handle is attached at the bottom so you can't nest it. So, for now, I prefer this Pyrex. This, for me, is a very useful "bowl." And a "must have" in my kitchen.
UPDATE: I just put my Pyrex measuring cup I'm my microwave to heat up the left over mashed potatoes from last night. I heard a loud bang and thought something had fallen. And, since my dog was nearby, I figured he did it. I looked all around and saw nothing. Then I looked in my microwave! There was my new measuring bowl shattered inside. Now, I know a VERY GOOD reason NOT to switch to the Pyrex! I've had my Anchor Hocking for YEARS without any problems. Now, I don't trust my Pyrex at all!
The previous measuring cup I had always would make a mess. This Pyrex measuring cup creates a nice stream when pouring no matter how fast or slow you pour. Even when the measuring cup is full the handle gives you a good grip to pour with one hand.
The large capacity is nice and I'm very happy with this purchase.
