The tempered glass that these Pyrex Essentials are made from perform very well for my needs. As a glass, it does not alter flavors like other materials can. As a tempered soda lime silica glass, it's durable and capable of withstanding high-heat cooking/baking/cleaning/shock...and it is suitable for usage in the dishwasher to make cleanup easier. With a good lid design, these are great for liquids (ex: brining or soaking beans) and reduce mess. Being compact, I find these are easy to store. I also really like how these are clear...and I find I do use this to my benefit (ex: looking for clumps of unblended flour that may be stock to the bottom or side wall.) The sizes themselves are also a real plus. Ranging from the small 1 quart to giant 4 quart, this wide range in sizes means that these can tackle jobs of all different sizes. Finally, I like how the bowls used a flared lip at the top. While the purpose of this is so these bowls can use a lid, I find this reduces spills and gives you a lot better leverage when holding the bowl and stirring something thick (such as a batter.)
The only possible downside is that some people may not like the heft of these...being these use thick tempered glass, they have quite a lot of weight to them. I personally really like this as I find it helps keep the bowl more stable, but some people may find the weight is not what they prefer.
Price-wise, I am also really satisfied with the purchase. Nice mixing bowls are not cheap to begin with, let alone nice mixing bowls that are clear and have an excellent lid. So for under $8 per bowl & lid, I think this is an excellent value.
Overall these are just great mixing bowls and I don't think you can go wrong here.

===SIDE NOTE -- BOROSILICATE GLASS and the MODERN PYREX GLASS===
It may be worth noting that modern home-use Pyrex containers are NOT currently made from borosilicate glass. Up until around 2000, it was borosilicate, but it is now a tempered soda lime silica glass made by a different company.
That can raise interests in regards to the differences between the older borosilicate and the current soda lime silica glass. More-or-less, borosilicate glass is more heat-resistant and can better handle drastic temperature fluctuations, where as soda lime silica glass tends to be slightly more resistant to damage from shock. Borosilicate is also more expensive to produce, and Pyrex's use of soda lime glass is arguably a major reason they can offer a high-quality mixing bowl set (with lids) for not much more than an inexpensive economy set (without lids.)
I own my fair share of plastic type of containers, even bowls, and although I try and be careful (and they are kept ultra clean) they have a tendency to stain. It's just the nature of the beast. Plus, even though my containers may be microwave safe, it's a given, eventually their plastic lids will somehow not fit the container well. Even with the more expensive ones. And alas, they will eventually find their way to the Plastic Graveyard. And we earthlings discard way too much plastic for our dear Mother Earth to handle.
My search for a decent glass Serving/Mixing bowl around 3-4 quart size, led me to the Internet. After checking out the usual online and brick and mortar stores, I realized that ordering this 8-piece Pyrex set (from Amazon), would be a practical move. I can always find a good use for different size glass mixing bowls. And having owned Pyrex in the past, I know the quality of the items will consistently be top notch. Yes, the lids are plastic, I realize that. But it does not negate my opinion of plastic bowls and containers.
This Pyrex 8-piece set for $16.99 at 4 bowls + 4 lids, is a decent buy. I found the Pyrex 4 qt Smart Essentials glass bowl and lid here on Amazon, but for $14.50, and the 2.5 qt Pyrex glass bowl and lid (also Smart Essentials), for $17.99 (but why the more expensive price for the smaller size??), the $16.99 8 piece set, made a lot more sense and struck the right chord with me.
The bowls are heavy weight, and in my opinion, just as lovely as a super-expensive designer name glass bowl. I also like the idea of having the lids to snap on top. They all wash easily, and of course, comes with common sense instructions on how to avoid cracking the glass.
Am figuring this Pyrex Smart Essentials 8-Piece set, with careful and common sense handling (but hey, that goes for any glass item) will be in our home for many years. And will outlast all or most of my plastic bowls and containers.
Lesson of this story? And that is why Pyrex Glass kicks Plastic's Butt.
Pros
+ Perfect sizes. The largest is big enough for a batch of cookies or a casserole. The smallest is the size of a large cereal bowl, perfect for small side dishes.
+ Lids are durable and high quality. Microwave and dishwasher safe and fit securely on bowls turning these lovely serving bowls into storage tupperware.
+ Solid weight. The glass feels high quality and sturdy, exactly how I imagine Pyrex to feel.
+ Bowl edges. The lips on the side of the bowl make them super easy to pick up (glass bowls are usually slippery), even when the bowl itself contains hot food.
+ Nesting. Both the bowls and lids nest and stack together so it saves a lot of space
Cons
- Lid colors. I'd prefer if the lids were all one color (red!), but the different colors make it easy to spot the appropriate lid for your bowl.
- Solid weight. Although the weight of glass products is always a plus for me, it is a little difficult for me as a small woman to lift all four bowls down from a cabinet when they're nested together.

It is true these bowl are quite shallow. I don't know if a mixer could be used. I guess it could work if you start at the lowest speed.
They work very well for salads. The box says can be used in the microwave or oven. They should never be used on the stove. They also recommend not exposing the bowls to great temperature differences.
The 4 bowls nicely nest into each other so they are easier to store.
