This attachment works exactly as advertised. I'm not sure why people are complaining about it only being used for re-filling, that's all it was designed to do. I vacuum my tank with the original python attachment and then swap it out for this one. I don't run a lid on my 65 gallon so this is very useful to me. It's pretty ridiculous to one star a product just because you don't understand how it works or you're using it wrong.

WARNING= MAKE SURE YOU DO THIS And You Will Love This New Hook Attachment

I have six fish tanks. It can be a daunting task to do weekly water changes at times. I have been using the Aqueon water changer for quite a few years. This past spring, I just had to get a Python as the Aqueon cracked and was giving me problems. The Python has a larger capacity line in it but it is softer and tends to bend more easily. One of the ways to fix this problem is to use this Hands Free attachments.

WHAT IS THIS ATTACHMENT LIKE?
A pretty sturdy green plastic, this hook is one of the best things I have had for the fish tanks. It comes with a black washer and it screws in where the usual tube that comes with the Python is attached. The idea is to hook the hook over the tank edge, let it fill and then turn the switch (which is still there from the other intake/outflow tube) and move to the next tank.

HOW DOES THIS WORK FOR US?
This makes the task of doing the fish tank water changes SO much quicker and easier. Instead of having to babysit the tube to be sure it does not change position or move, we can just quickly hook it on the edge of the tank and then tend to other tanks while it fills. When turning the switch, we can move it to the other tanks very quickly and easily. WE LOVE THIS HOOK!

We take the water out via suction syphon hose and carry buckets so we can water our plants around our house. We leave the hook on and only use the Python to refill our tanks this time of year. If you wanted to use the Python to take out water and put it in, you will have to change the attachments after withdrawing water and then put the hook on.

ONE WARNING
One thing I want to warn you about. The Python is using inferior washers in the system. This causes leakage, and frustration with the system that would discourage a lot of people from keeping it. One simple thing you want to do is to buy a package of RUBBER GARDEN HOSE WASHERS. They only cost about $2 a dozen at the local hardware store. If you replace ALL washers with the rubber ones you won't have any leakage. That includes the one that comes with this hands free hook attachment.

THE BOTTOM LINE
Once we replaced all of our washers in the Python with RUBBER GARDEN HOSE WASHERS, including in this attachment, this hook makes our lives a lot easier when doing multiple water changes in our tanks. If you refill your tanks and use the original hose end to take water out of the tube, you will have to connect this hook every time you want to change what you are doing. If you remove the water with buckets, then you can use this hook and leave it on the hose.

This gets five stars for making it really easy to refill fish tanks, although it is irritating that they don't provide rubber washers to begin with that don't leak.

Do people not know or realize that this is JUST for refilling the tank after using the python to suction the gravel?

I bought one of these to try and make my life easier when tending to water changes on my 40-gallon aquarium. To use this, you simply unscrew the end where the suction tube (mine is 24" long) resides and couples into the hose, and screw this hook in. The hook attaches to the side of the tank meaning you can free up BOTH hands to adjust the water temperature or work on other things while the tank refills with fresh water from the tap.

THIS IS NOT MEANT TO SUCTION THE GRAVEL.

Sure, you can use the tube to refill, and you can stand there and hold it until the tank refills. Is this attachment completely necessary? No. But it certainly makes refilling way less of a headache.

Seemed GImmicky But I Was Wrong

I was on the fence about buying this since it seemed expensive for something you might not need but I was wrong. I have several large tanks that I do water changes on by myself and I use this every single time. You can hook it on and walk around the house while it fills up your tank. I was always paranoid about the regular gravel vacuum part flying out of the tank and the water spraying everywhere. This way I know it's secure. It also makes sense if you have a large tank to fill up so you don't have to stand there and watch it all day while it takes a long time to fill up.

Anyway, if you do a lot of water changes, this makes your life so so much easier and makes you feel secure. You probably think the Python was a game changer. Add this, and it'll improve your tank maintenance experience a lot more.

I had the python vac for years and cleaned/refilled with the gravel tube the whole time. It took a certain way to not make water mess on wood floor by balancing the hose weight and leveraging the tube under the lid with some weight on it since my sink was far. There have been times the tube misdirected water onto the top or fell off of top and flowed on floor. Got to where I needed to buy more hose length and found this hook, well let me say they should include this with the vacuum kit is is so good. Shame on python for not including this with every kit because I didn’t even know it existed at the time I bought the thing years ago and it adds so much value to the main kit. The python vacuum kit is going strong for at least a decade now.

This makes filling a tank way easier and I think is a must have for the Python. You can hang it on the tank and walk away. One word of caution: there is nothing to diffuse the water that enters the tank so if you have sand or other small substrate it's going to end up blowing it everywhere.

I used the intake strainer that came with my FX4, which I didn't need anyway, and was able to (although barely) fit it over the end - problem solved! There are many ways to go about doing this, I just used what I had on hand.

I'm not sure why there are negative remarks in the reviews about draining the water from the tank with this accessory. This is not for draining your tank.

Well I sort of like python tubing - does not go hard like some of the competitors. I wanted to make up a large hook over for helping to drain and fill aquariums in my fish room. The picture gives little info away as to details - depth of thread, type of thread BSP, NPT , Metric. I wasn't overly worried as I had bought a brass adapter to fit python to the hook (tried the plastic one and found it wanting) When it arrived I got a better view of it. The female thread lacks depth and the bottom of the thread face, which could maybe have provided a seal, was far from flat The hook is a relatively soft type of plastic casting and the casting irregularities added to the problem. Because the face surface was not flat and the thread depth was shallow made cross threading of the male/ female threads nearly inevitable. Silicone sealant may have helped but shallow thread depth would IMO still leave an unreliable joint.
