A couple of tips, first if you dont want to suck on the tube with your mouth, submerge the whole thing in the tank, make sure there are no air bubbles in the hose. Put your thumb over the end and keep it there until you put it in the bucket.
Second, keep your hand on the hose and ready to kink it just above the big tube. If you suck up too much gravel and it starts to get sucked out, kinking it will let the gravel, or your fish, fall back down into the tank.
I had an older Python set - with a long hose and the connection to the sink kit, which allowed you to get the siphon going using the faucet. I gave up using that part long ago, since it is easy to get the siphon going if the tank is on a stand, as ours is.
However the green plastic part - at the top end of the clear tube, where the hose connects - cracked and fell apart, fell to pieces - within 10 days of purchase. 10 days! We live in coastal Southern California and it has not been hot here, nor was the unit left in direct sunlight, etc.
I already threw away the packaging long ago, or I would attempt to return it for a refund. Python - SHAME ON YOU for using such a low quality material, molding/manufacturing process, or both, to produce a truly sub-par product. I mean, really! I'd give this zero stars and return it if I could, but again I threw out the packaging since it arrived in one piece and appeared serviceable when I opened it.
This thing is AWESOME and works INCREDIBLY well. If I had known how fast and large this thing actually was going to be, I would have gotten the smaller one for my 10 Gallon tank. This thing is WAY TOO BIG for a 10 gallon tank. And it drained out about 5 gallons in under a minute. So that doesn't really give you enough time to clean your gravel or suck out most of the gunk floating around.
I'm going to keep it for future tanks that I may get but I'm going to definitely get another Python Siphon in a much smaller size for my 10 gallon.
