Bought an $89 DVR from Amazon, not the same name brand, and out the box it had problems. Because they refunded so quickly, I shall not name them. Bought this and I am greatly pleased. I'm pretty tech savvy, but that was not needed here. I have 3 android devices, 1 Samsung S4, HP tablet & Asus TF700T. I was able to remotely view from all three devices. It was a little difficult to figure out what info to enter, but after playing around, because I'm one of those people that want to figure it out then read the instructions, there is such an easy tool they have. QR scan code. In settings on DVR, go to information, there is a qr code. On mobile device, open up app and click on the qr code and the scanner pops up. That's it, no entering, all automatic. Now here's the thing, the app is called "Qsee", but there are different versions depending on the compatibility of android device. Try all until you find the one that has a qr code scanner when you open the app. Picture quality to HD TV via HDMI cable it beautiful. This dvr replaced my computer run security system.
By the way, I own it less than a month, so I will update if any problems come up.

I went through Q-see's tech support several times before and after the installation. The live chat is fairly fast in response and technicians are very knowledgeable with the details of the products.

All 8 cams can be independently configured depending on the day of week and time and the recording modes that suit you. Also you can choose exactly which part of a screenshot that you want to cover with motion detection with adjustable sensitivity and which part to ignore. This is very helpful if part of the screenshot covers public street and you don't want motion detection to trigger all the time. I set up mine in a way that only when people walk into my property will trigger the recording. This is a very nice function. And the flexibility I have with each cam at different times of days is also really nice. You can turn motion detection off, say on weekends, with cams in the backyard so family activity does not overload the recording unnecessarily.

The online documentation is very complete and detailed. I didn't even read the CD manual. I just searched online and got all my questions answered.

It is a bit tricky to set up internet viewing with a remote PC. But setting up mobile access is really easy.

The only small complaint I have is they provide the exact amount of screws. I dropped a few during installation and became short on the screws. The other inconvenience is there is no power button on the unit. To bring the system back up after a shutdown, you have to unplug the power and plug it back again. My power plug is under a very tight space. So it is painful to power cycle the unit.

But other than that, this system is well worth the investment.

Supports Mac easily and Windows. Very small footprint. This is the only brand I ever found that lets you trigger off one camera off of another for motion detection. For example you might want to turn on a camera around a corner to capture someone as they went from one camera viewpoint to another. I bought this one to support 960H, right now it works fine on my old cameras. Prices have really went down on these things and this one is a bargain with the 1 TB drive.

Dealing with their tech support was a pleasure. I had to call them because of an error in their DDNS setup sheet that I was using to setup external viewing on my mobile phone. In the field Domain name they have http:// in front of the domain name, which was wrong, http:// should NOT be typed in the field. Once I just entered the domain name I had set up in their myq-see.com domain service it work great! Also I learned you cannot in any browser configure the masked out area for a camera, that must be only done at the DVR. Once I knew I could not do it, that was fine with me, I just needed to know. I also verified that it will support both 960h and non-960h concurrently which I needed because I will have small hidden invisible led 940nm wavelength 700tvl cameras besides the larger visible red led 960h cameras.

In all this was a nice experience. If you are considering a 4-camera unit, my advice is go with an 8 port with 4 cameras at first as until you get it you don't realize how you eventually want to see more, or you discover holes in your surveillance area.

I highly recommend this unit. This is third once I installed, and the second Q-see brand one I installed. To me, I am sticking with Q-see.

Aside from the inherent complexities of running wires, the system was not too hard to set up. The user interface was pretty intuitive, I only referenced the manual a couple of times. The camera settings were not too hard to configure - each camera with a different schedule - when it's on or off, or motion detecting. The android and iPhone apps worked okay, a little buggy but tolerable. When set up correctly - it would email a snapshot if it detected motion. The overall clarity of the video was okay. BUT the claim that you can read license plates at a reasonable distance is not true. We tested with the camera at 3' high, directly at a license plate and found that the numbers were only barely legible at 15' , in perfect light, when the vehicle was stationary. With a camera mounted under the eaves of a house - it was not possible to drive close enough to the camera to read the state on the license plate. If license plate legibility is not a requirement, this could be the perfect solution, although I would recommend skipping the PTZ option unless you are going to be sitting at a desk monitoring the system. It has a limited range when stationary and doesn't seem like it wold be convenient to have to manually pan it around. It might make more sense to have 2 regular cameras covering the same area with constant feed. For me, being able to read license plate numbers was a requirement, so I returned the system and will sadly be spending 3 x as much for a digital system. PS - the return of this was hassle free.
