Building anything 3D requires a steady base to build on. This is where Qixels fail. There is nothing to hold the first layer in place on the base other than gravity. Just a slight bump, jiggle or breath and they slide out of registration, so you can't put the next layer in place. The fix is easy, just cover the base plate with some double sided tape (as shown in the picture) to hold your first layer in place. Then all the subsequent layers will register properly. With this fix, they work great, grandkids love 'em.
This is a neat product! My son who is in 1st grade can do all by himself and the finished product is amazing! My older boys in 4th and 7th like to make things too! Great esteem building project for 1st graders! Built well! My only recommendation is to buy Refill Pack for extra colors as some of the colors are not included in the Maker. The refill pack has pearl colors so my son picked his own colors for the birds. They also have the animal ranch, jungle, bugs and or alien packs in 3d.
This kept my 8 year old busy for a few hours! He loves it. I would only recommend this for kids 8 years old and older. It was too difficult for my 7 year old son. It requires very fine motor skills and lots of patience which younger kids don't have. It only requires a small amount of warm water and lots of time. Watch a YouTube video tutorial before you begin. There were several helpful tips online not covered in the instructions.

Out of our qixels adventure this seems to be the best purchase so far. It actually works and comes with a decent amount of those little thingies. I learned the hard way though that you really do need to put the spacers that aren't actually labeled anywhere as spacers. We thought they were just clear ones. Nope. The directions don't actually say anywhere that oh by the way these clear ones don't stick and are meant to be used where there are white squares with black dots. Thankfully I did the first one so my son wasn't disappointment in his first go round at this. So yeah it would be great if the instructions were more clear but hopefully everyone else figures it out sooner than I did.
My 5 year old loves it. He is learning how to build 3D structure. It is difficult for him at the beginning and after some explanation he's starts getting the three dimension idea. One important thing needs to bring up is two small bags of qixel cube only come with 1 cube inside! That means I got less cube than advertised! It also means poor product quality check.
Also, the cubes don't stack/align well on top of each other. The platform concept is good but the design is not perfect especially for younger kids.
Waste of money. Despite following directions and trying some tips we found online, they don't adhere well. I had one disappointed kiddo that chose this with money she had saved up. That being said I had a no hassle return and the seller was easy to deal with.
I bought this for my son's 6th birthday. He loves being able to create things that are 3 dimensional. We also bought an additional expansion pack. The first couple of builds he needed help with, but after that he did the rest on his own.
We've done a lot of designs with perler beads in the past, but my son was always a bit frustrated that he needed to wait for me to iron them when he was done. He loves his Qixels because they just connect with water and he doesn't need anyone's help to complete his designs.
Now that he understands the basics of building with the Qixels 3D Maker, we bought an expansion pack that's just beads, https://www.amazon.com/Qixels-S4-Mega-Refill-Pack/dp/B01M0NPURE/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1502142742&sr=8-4&keywords=qixels+3d+refill. He's excited to come up with his own designs.
