Equipped with powerful yet energy efficient Freescale ARM Cortex-A9 dual-core 1.2GHz processor, the TS-231 is a high-performance home NAS providing incredible performance of up to 110MB/s read & 80MB/s write throughput. The TS-231’s enhanced encryption and decryption performance provides transfer speeds of over 30MB/s with AES-256 bit full NAS volume encryption, boosting system performance & security while ensuring the safety of sensitive personal data stored in the TS-231. You can also use the TS-231 as a home multimedia hub to enjoy your photo, music and videos while downloading or backing up files without impacting the TS-231’s performance. When installed with the latest 802.11ac or dual-band 2.4GHz/5GHz 802.11n Wi-Fi USB adapter, the TS-231 can offer remarkably high speeds for transferring large amount of files and streaming bandwidth-consuming multimedia.
High Efficiency With Dual LAN Support
The TS-231 supports multiple port-trunking modes, enabling IT administrators to set up link aggregation to increase total data transmission capability. Failover and dual IP are also supported to ensure continuous system operations. The supported port-trunking modes include: Balance-rr (Round-Robin), Active Backup, Balance XOR, Broadcast, IEEE 802.3ad, Balance-tlb (Adaptive Transmit Load Balancing) and Balance-alb (Adaptive Load Balancing).
Offline Video Transcoding
With offline transcoding, if you can only connect to a slow, limited or restricted Internet connection, you can still enjoy smooth video streaming by playing a version of the video with a pre-rendered, optimized resolution. By setting an automatic transcoding folder, the TS-231 will automatically convert the videos in this folder to a range of resolutions for use on many different devices and internet speeds. You can also use the Qfile app on an iOS device to browse videos and photos stored on the TS-231 and play on the TV via Apple TV. By installing the QAirplay app from the QTS App Center, you can stream your media content directly on a TV via Apple TV. The media contents are streaming on Apple TV, bypassing your mobile device, thus saving the energy of your mobile device.
Create Digital Notes On Your Private Cloud
Notes Station provides a private & secure way to share and collaborate on digital notes. With just a few steps you can create notes from web pages (or by importing from the TS-231), edit notes with the intuitive web-based editor, and take screenshots for quick note-taking with Qsnap or the Notes Station Clipper extension for Chrome. You can also easily leverage the rich media contents stored on the TS-231 to enhance your notes, and access them on your mobile phones or tablet devices by using Qnotes mobile app anytime, anywhere.

For the price, this works great. QNAP product management needs to stick with what they do best. The apps that are available for backing up files, synchronization, etc., do NOT work well at all, especially those meant for cloud backup.
Even though it costs $60, I use SyncBackPro for all of my syncing between the NAS and the Cloud.
Other than the apps, everything on the NAS works great. Easy setup. Low noise. Low operating temperature.
Been using this for a few months now. I would recommend a different NAS, a non-QNAP NAS. It's sluggish at times. NEEDS to be rebooted at least once a week.
QNAP needs to focus on the main purpose for a NAS and THEN begin working on additions. It has so many "features" that it's causing problems on itself.
Dropping this down to 2 stars from 4. I would NOT purchase this item again, nor anything from QNAP.
Needed a screwdriver to install the drives but I don't mind that. Software setup involved downloading a firmware and also setting up the RAID, took about an hour, but I didn't have to do much in that hour.
The web interface is really powerful, and only have minor issues that can be overlooked. I can't fathom just how much effort went into that web GUI. You can literally install a bittorrent client app, and if you want, also force the NAS to use a VPN so you can safely use torrents.
The machine likes to beep for things. If it loses a connection, it will beep. If it needs to reconnect a drive, it will beep. If you set it up and leave it alone on a good home network, it will be fine. But I haven't found a way to turn off the beeps.
It's pretty good at asking you if a folder is a media folder or if it should be synced. It has good control over user access options too, multiple user names each with different permissions for different folders.
Synchronizing is really close to Dropbox, as advertised, except it doesn't have any intelligent file renaming when there's a file conflict, instead, there will be a dialog asking you what to do.
It can be a bit technical to setup but the web interface is clean and intuitive. QNAO has done a good job at making it as simple or complex as you want.
Be sure to login as Administrator at least every month to download App and Firmware updates. The Firmware updates over the year have fixed security issues and revamped the overall experience and performance of the NAS.
I have recommended this NAS to everyone I know who talks about wanting to store files, photos and videos locally instead of throwing their entire lives out on the Cloud - Facebook, YouTube, Google+ etc...
The FIRST thing you should do after setup completes is download and install their applications. It would be nice if you didn't have to, but they make using the device and capabilities so much easier.
I am using more of the features now and content is now shared and backed up to this unit. Initial setup was fine, but sharing content to this was time consuming no matter how you do it.
I am still trying to figure out the trans-coding features on this device, but it seems to have taken much of my content and is listing it as available to my DLNA enabled devices.
I use a home automation networking product called Domotz which recently stopped working on my NAS. I emailed the company and they stated that QNAP is using an out of date openSSL package (1.0) and does not plan to update it. Their product will not work with insecure openSSL. This makes my NAS incompatible with ANY up-to-date SSL platform... Here is the email from Domotz:
You are among the users of Domotz using Domotz on a Freescale QNAP NAS.
Your model of NAS his running a very obsolete version of openSSL (1.0.0) which can cause security risks and became incompatible with our services. As a result your Domotz agent named Home is not currently working and Domotz can no longer work on QNAP models running on Freescale architecture. We have asked QNAP if they had plans for upgrading those models to a secure version of openSSL but they said that there are no plans as these models of QNAP have reached their end-of-life.
I recognise you have paid for Domotz credits and that you are using that agent, so I would like to accommodate your situation as best as possible (e.g. give unused credit back, help you with moving Domotz to another platform, or any action you would judge more appropriate).
I am very sorry for any inconvenience this is causing. Unfortunately it is outside our control but we will do our best to solve your specific case. Please just write to firstname.lastname@example.org so that we can help with the preferred steps.

Some of the additional features that drew me to this unit are that I can stream all my media (movies/pictures etc) to my smart TV via DLNA or AirPlay so I no longer need to have my laptop cabled up to the TV I want to use. And using a combination of Qsync/FTP server/myqnapcloud I can access the QNAP unit and all the data from anywhere on my laptop or phone.
So, 5 out of 5 stars because not only was I able to do what I originally needed to do, but I also have it doing lots of other stuff that is beneficial in itself.
