The MHL (Mobile High-Definition Link) Consortium was formed to develop a new mobile audio/video interface standard for directly connecting mobile phones and other portable consumer electronics (CE) devices to high-definition televisions(HDTVs) and displays. The MHL standard features a single-cable with a low pin-count interface able to support up to 1080p high-definition (HD) video and digital audio while simultaneously charging the connected device.

So, you can watch a film stored on your Galaxy S3, play it through your HDTV and keep the phone charged at the same time.

-Works as described
-Build quality seems decent
-Reference in description that indicates you can use this without an external power source is wrong. It must be plugged in to a power supply (use the one that came to charge your phone) or the picture will not project onto the TV. This may be a function of all of these cables and not this particular one. I read this is true of the Samsung cable too, but don't know for sure since I've never used it.
-Phone will discharge while using this cable, even though the cable is connected to the power supply. So, before you watch a movie or plan to play a long game, be sure your phone is fully charged. I used about 50% of the power using it for 3 hours and I had it in airplane mode with wifi off as well--only Bluetooth was on so that I could operate the phone remotely from my keyboard.
A few other notes that aren't really the fault of this product, but you should know: not all things on the phone screen will show up on the TV. For example, when you touch the screen watching a movie the play/pause, FF, REW buttons that show up on the phone screen don't show up on the HDMI out, so you can't pause the movie remotely (like I wanted to with my Bluetooth keyboard). If I wanted to do any of this I had to walk over to my phone and touch the screen itself. Also, since your keyboard probably won't have anything that controls the menu or task buttons there are certain other functions that can be difficult if you have this hooked up across the room. My esc key did function as a back key in most cases, so at least I could go back a screen and exit some apps that function that way.
Overall this is a great product at a reasonable price and I highly recommend it. I suspect that it will drop further in price as more alternatives are made for the S3.
So, I was duped not only once, but twice. Never again will I be purchasing cheap knockoff cables. Since I have to purchase the OEM cable now for the SIII, the money I thought I was saving will now be invested in the OEM product. Just start there and save yourself the headache!
Summary: if you have the s3, don't waste your money, this item does not work for the s3.
