Privacy crippling software required.

I would give it less than one star if I could. The associated app is next to impossible to find. Then, since the app looked suspicious, I downloaded it on a spare, empty phone I have. It requires all kinds of permissions from the phone and downloads all kinds of Chinese tracking software just to run a bluetooth app. It was scary intrusive. I decided not to use it.

I have a Garage Queen 2005 ‘Vette that gets out once or twice a month with which I’ve had an intermittent dead battery issue over the years that I was never able to diagnose. I jury rigged a VoltOhmMeter to avoid the dead battery surprise but it’s a pain to put on/take off. The other day in my mind I “invented” a remote voltage monitor along the lines of those Oregon Scientific remote temperature gizmos I have. But I figured that if I “invented” something - someone else already had so I went looking for one. Amazon to the rescue! On to the Review: This monitor and its app is mucho slick and very cost effective. Easy peasy set up and meets (exceeds) its specs - accuracy is within .01v in my case and its Bluetooth range is ~50’ being careful to not have something in its path, like a kitchen oven. Keep in mind the 'Vette is fiberglass, not metal. The smartphone app is a no brainer to use and very well done. The manual is one of the better translated-from-Chinese-types. I do not use the other options, e.g. cranking test, so I can’t comment on those. Over the last few days I’ve seen no decrease in voltage which tells me it probably meets its spec for power consumption as well – negligible. So, for ~$35 you can’t go wrong. Here’s some irony for you: while messing with this I discovered my ‘Vette’s interior hood light doesn’t turn off all the time due to its unreliable mercury switch operation (a known issue apparently). So in one swell foop I have a great monitor for my cars/motorhome and solved my ‘Vette’s problem. Win win win.

Early Failure

It is important to know this battery monitor will only communicate with a Bluetooth device -- like an iPhone -- over a very short distance. Maybe a dozen feet. And said iPhone needs to have its Bluetooth turned on, which is a small but continuous power drain.

My Quicklynks unit is problematic. It tends to underestimate the charge on the battery, complaining that it is almost out of charge when it still has plenty of cranking power. Also, it sometimes says the battery is still being charged after I've turned off the engine.

I'm learning to take its reporting with a big grain of salt. I still think it has some value, but I'd be happier if it was more accurate, and had more transmission range.

Before I bought this unit I had purchased another, similar device that was supposed to link up with my WiFi network, and do much the same in terms of monitoring the battery. Unfortunately that device also suffered from poor range. It could not link up to my WiFi system while sitting in my driveway, just outside my house. That, plus a difficult setup procedure, led me to return that unit for a refund.

If I can find a better battery monitor -- one I can trust, has WiFi capability and decent range -- I'll probably replace the Quicklynks unit. For now, I'll leave it installed.

Update March 27, 2019 -- Unit is no longer working at all. It has been reading "0% Charge" on the battery, when there is still plenty of power to crank and start the vehicle. I can no longer return it through Amazon -- I'm past the 30 day limit -- so I am trying to get the vendor to replace or refund it under warranty. But their phone number listed on the Amazon product page has been disconnected. I haven't given up yet, but I'm probably going to have to go through Amazon to get the vendor -- Quicklynks -- to respond.

Short version -- don't buy.

My phone is Android 4.4.4 and it will not stay connected. I finally uninstalled and reinstalled and it did the same thing. It connects, but once it disconnects, you can never get it back up. It may show up on the app's bluetooth screen, but when you go back to the voltage test, it says unconnect in red on the upper right. Nothing I did made any difference. For the last short time my phone saw it, it said it was 12.81V 100% Battery OK.
I downloaded the app to my tablet while I was in the house and it quickly said it was 12.79 volts 49% Low Power. I went for a ride. and checked it. after I got back it said it was 12.91V and Low Power. When I came in to my living room it was "UnConnect" (instead of "unconnected". I hate that.) I walked back to the kitchen and it says 12.89V 87% Battery OK. At least it reconnected. I thought the diagnosis might be a little buggy. I use the chart attached.

Update 12/3/18
This was connecting fairly well to my fire tablet. now It won't connect. The tablet sees it but if you try to pair it asked for a PIN 0000 and 1234 don't work. hitting the connect button on the top of the program also doesn't work.

Won't connect even after uninstall and reinstall on my phone and my tablet (and loosing all my data). Dropped to one star this is junk. It is cold out, but I might have to uninstall and reinstall the hardware. The next step is to send it back. Has any one found a better model?

When it works it's very useful but it stops transmitting all the time, sometimes lasts a day, even 2 days and sometimes a few hours. So have to open the bonnet, disconnect and reconnect terminals all the time. Don't bother any more, back to a multimeter for me. This is the second one that does this from another copy brand.

Great way to monitor a domestic battery in a campervan/motorhome

A very simple and low cost way to monitor a battery use. Highly recommended.

I have installed it in my campervan on the domestic battery. It gives me a plot of the voltage over the last 30 days whenever I connect my phone by bluetooth. From that it is easy to see the state of charge both when in storage over winter and in active use the rest of the year.

I've used various amp counting battery monitors before on boats - but nothing as simple and cheap and easy to install as this. And sometimes simple is better.

My van has a voltage gauge on the battery but this is both more accurate and gives me how the voltage has changed over the last few days. The iphone app works perfectly for this. I've had no problems with this app. It asks for permission to use bluetooth as it has to - so no what sure is meant by asking for "scary" permissions. It just does the job.
