The Qixels 3D Maker gives you the power to shape and create Qixels in 3D! Use the 3D Maker's unique 'layer by layer' technology to add another dimension to your creations and make them stand out from the rest. Build them up and build them out and start building a 3D Qixel World! Build up your design and brush with water and they magically stick together! When they dry, they stay and you’re ready to play! There are tonnes of cool themes to choose from in the 3D range!

Then his 6-y-o brother jumped in... Having not taken note of the crucial steps, he too, got all messed up and his creation crumbled. But with a tiny bit of help, he had the concepts down and was producing as well.
This is a great toy that I've even recommended to a highschool teacher for its 3D printing concepts of support, voids, alignment and layers.
Keys for parents to know are:
- the build platform must be in the fully raised position when starting
- do not slam the new layer onto the platform. This will misalign the layers and push the platform down too much
- follow directions carefully using the "support blocks" where they are called for.
- the red box must align completely in the window so you're building the layer in proper alignment.
This is a great toy! It shouldn't be listed for kids under 6 without CONSTANT adult supervision or for kids under 10 or 11 without adult help. Alignment and direction-following skill are critical. But if you can do that, this is an AWESOME toy that can really teach spatial thinking and lead to 3D design.
Black blocks weren't included in ours but kids are having fun using other colors in their place. We've even made a "burnt chicken" already!
We've done a lot of designs with perler beads in the past, but my son was always a bit frustrated that he needed to wait for me to iron them when he was done. He loves his Qixels because they just connect with water and he doesn't need anyone's help to complete his designs.
Now that he understands the basics of building with the Qixels 3D Maker, we bought an expansion pack that's just beads, https://www.amazon.com/Qixels-S4-Mega-Refill-Pack/dp/B01M0NPURE/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1502142742&sr=8-4&keywords=qixels+3d+refill. He's excited to come up with his own designs.
