Wish it had the ability to upgrade features that it may not come with model but are on other models. Cant afford to buy them all. Service is oversees but has been able to assist with my questions responsibly and educate me on feature use.
BUT oh dear the software. Yes, it LOOKS very pretty, but it's really a bad case of "never mind the quality, feel the width". Lots and lots of "This Station" and "That Station" with somewhat overlapping functions. A confused mix of virtualization functions, with descriptions that are clearly written by marketing people ("with this app you can do amazing things") rather than someone who tells you WHAT a function is for and HOW it relates to others (I've been a computer pro for 30 years, and still can't puzzle out some of them). The companion apps on iOS and other platforms are equally awful. Worse, to try to make the whole thing user friendly, some things are wired-in and good luck changing them. Files are indexed for media content regardless of what you do to manage this, there is almost no control over various spurious shares that get switched on no matter what you do.
So 4.5 stars for great hardware, but 2 stars at best for a big pile of incoherent software.
The first box I got from Amazon had to be a previous return or grey-market. It was missing parts and wasn't neat and tidy in it packaging (bags open, plastic wrap there but loose and taped, box taped outside and serial#/MAC# stickers covered over.) Could have been from factory but it just looked dodgy.
I worked with Daniel at QNAP - I'm not afraid to make a device work for lack of 'nit-picky' bits - who agreed the device looked sketchy and offered support. We got it running with some test drives but I was concerned it was returned for cause and really needed mounting screws. Daniel confirmed I bought it from Amazon directly and not the QNAP store at Amazon. To Amazon's credit they cross shipped a new box which I got the next day and paid return shipping, once I asked for the RMA. (my one complaint of Amazon, beside shipping an opened box is that its hard to determine who you buy from when its not a third party (ie Chuck's bargain basement)
The replacement box was perfect - tight wrapping, all the parts included, booted right up, and I'll add, migrated the test hard drives straight away with no additional work. Great to know that - just plug new drives in and 'Boom' you've migrated from a failed device or upgraded to a bigger device. Great DR test!
As for the device itself- I am still working with it, but to suffice to say I am pretty 'over the moon' with it. Primarily I am looks for a NAS for storage and backup. So this was a bit of an R&D project. It supports Vm images, Docker containers and has a bevvy of apps you can install directly. Holy Cow! with 4 GigE interfaces (bondable or not in groups of two) and a 10GigE expansion slot (copper of Fibre) this is really capable of supporting todays data throughput needs and supporting a small network. The apps range from Tomcat to web servers and caches/proxy, various wiki's, CMSs, video and music, vpn, DNS Domain controller, normal network services - everything you need to run it in a small or medium office and enjoy enterprise capabilities.
I am looking forward to updating this once to 5 stars once I finish testing it - I have a VM and application I want to install and test as well as set up third level back to AWS. I'd personally like to see an IR plug to pop in a receiver/repeater, and an digital output for music. But those are tiny nits and so far this looks like one incredible box. Really looking forward to working on it and plugging a few holes in my own local network at a fraction of the cost and complexity of spinning up an enterprise (read horrible expensive) SAN and server farm.
