QNAP 419-P II

I wanted a media server, a backup device, a place to store files as well as a place to store security cam footage
I like the media functions, it works fine with my Squeezebox and my WD Live TV Hub and My Logitech Revue for both movies and music.
Setup was simple, you need to see the forum for the tricks on speeding up raid creation. I used 4 Hitachi 2 TB drives in a Raid 5, it took about 12 hours to build the raid. Make sure you check the compatible drives list on the website.

The external Esata connection is not a powered connection so you need either a powered ESATA dock or a cable that combines Esata and USB.

Its just been running since I set it up. I have a spare drive on the shelf for my Raid and I have a drive I am going to use in a esata dock for backing up critical files.

Its been running for 3 weeks now, I am happy with my purchase and have no complaints and would recommend this device.

Great so far when the power supply works.

QNap Notes:
My initial great start came to quick halt and 10-day delay. But ultimately, I'm impressed by this NAS unit. My notes and observations for the installation below:

- Upon initially setting up the QNAP for the first time, I downloaded latest firmware (3.7.3 at the time) and QFinder apps from their website.
- The provided ethernet crossover cables are VERY thin. You may want to consider a cable with standard gauge CAT5/6 wire, especially if you are looking for greater than 100Mbs link speeds.
- Once QFinder found my NAS, Safari was used to configure it initially. For Mac OS X, it seems Safari Version 6.0.2 (7356.26.17) is incompatible with the QNAP 3.7.3 firmware. FireFox 16.0.2 worked just fine.
- The power supply unit died during the first night I had the unit. It was connected to a UPS with automatic voltage control, too. Quite disappointing, but apparently not an uncommon issue that really should be resolved for good by QNAP by now.
- QNAP support was very responsive to e-mails and sent out a new power supply right away. However the shipping method (a version of UPS ground) was VERY slow. It took ten days from the initial scan at UPS until it arrived to my home. The last five days the package sat at the last UPS hop and they wouldn't let me pick it up. So you may not want to pay for express shipping to get your unit. If a power supply dies, you just wasted your shipping fee.
- The new power supply is a 12V 10A version, the old one was 12V 8A. One may want to inquire as to which power supply will be included.
- The new firmware version (3.8.0) installed without issue and the upgraded QNAP web interface/app was an improvement.
- I have (4) 3TB Seagate drives from the page of recommended drives. I have no insight what testing is actually done to determine compatibility. I did find a QNAP wiki with a list of compatible drives with a column containing customer comments. I hope this does not indicate the extent of compatibility testing. Get a drive designed for RAID applications, not a power-saving (aka "Green") drive. It will save you headaches.
- Regarding the power supply issues, you may want to see what your power draw is likely to be with drive mechanism of choice.
- An NAS with RAID is a fault tolerant device - not a back-up method (even though you can do Time Machine back-ups to it). Have a back-up plan for your NAS (external disk that goes offsite or safe location, or something like CrashPlan).
- The noise factor is mainly the drive mechanisms, not the QNAP enclosure. You may want to consider putting the unit somewhere out of the way doesn't get too warm (or too cold) and is within humidity tolerances. My unit will migrate to the basement where it is always between 58F and 65F and never too humid. It's not horrible, but I do notice the increased noise level in my office.
- Not to be paranoid, but the actual source of FireFly, Twonky, apache, etc. code isn't exactly known. This (and other) software RAID Linux-based devices are likely to contain your sensitive data and/or sit on your personal home network. There is at least virus protection software provided for this one. But keep in mind, one of the appeals of this device is having your datastore available to your mobile device, parents, etc., which make it available in some potential capacity to everyone else. I have "wake on network activity" configured. My NAS goes to sleep after some amount of time, then wakes up (all devices I own are down at the time) randomly - constantly.

The number of services one can enable and configure is impressive. Amazon and external reviews cover them more thoroughly than I. But, I can say that once you have this device running, the extent of the services available is more impressive in operation than just by reading. A couple of caveats - the Plex server is not yet available for ARM processors (the Marvel chip on this unit).

More to follow as configure and use different features more.

Good, but limited to 16Tb volumes

I have used my QNAP TS-419PII on a RAID-5 NAS with four Seagate Barracuda 3TB for over one year now and it has a reasonably good record.
I had one major problem when I lost one HDD and the system detected an "impending error" on a second one. It entered in a so-called "degraded mode" and did not allow me to format the replacement disk. Only way around was finding enough space elsewhere to backup 8TB (!) of data and start everything from scratch.
I would like to alert the buyers, however for the problem I'm facing now: after losing one by one the Seagate Barracudas 3TB (do not buy this lousy product!) I decided to upgrade into larger 4 x HGST Deskstar NAS 6TB HDDs.
I then found out - the hard way (because even QNAP help desk seems to ignore this fact) - that the TS-419PII has a 16TB volume limitation. There is no way you can expand to or build a new volume larger than this.
If you may have plans in the future for expanding beyond 16TB, you'd better buy a QNAP newer model or another brand.

Running the latest firmware 3.8.1(20121205) at the time of writing. The user interface is nice and very pretty but it stopped responding fairly often and I would have to close the browser and log back in to get it to start responding again. When the UI was working it was not uncommon for me to wait 15+ seconds for a screen to refresh. Initially I chalked this up to the 4 disk raid10 array performing an initial sync and consuming the majority of the resources however, this continued after the sync was complete (26 hours later) and persisted across reboots. The CPU was still pegged at over 90% and upon further investigation found the rpc.quotad service using over 80%. According to the forums this was initially reported as of firmware 3.5.0. Disabling NFS sharing stopped that but I actually need NFS so really not a solution at all. The resource monitor still reported 'mymediaserver' would consume around 40% even with MediaStation/MusicStation/etc disabled. The read/writes (on large files >1gb using SMB or iSCSI, as I had to disable NFS) were erratic but never topped 200Mb on a gigabit network where previously an opensource filer whitebox NAS (using the same disks/network/switches) was consistently achieving close to 90% link saturation. It took about an hour to back up the old array contents over the network to a local drive but about 6 to copy the same data back up to the new array. Technically everything "worked" but the performance was quite disappointing.

It has an incredible amount of potential and the myriad of additional services it offered was very impressive but this is primarily a NAS, one named 'Turbo' NAS; I really expected the performance to be better (or at least as good) than what a guy threw together out of spare parts and an opensource filer.
