I ordered this because it was on sale here and frankly it just looks better than the other similar products. I was running out of room on my internal hdds and my motherboard had no SATA slots left to install more. I could have gone for a much cheaper SATA expansion card to add more internal ports but I like the idea of easy access and hot swap ability. Amazon impressed again when the product arrived on my door step in less than 24 hours with free super saver shipping!

To the more technical side I wanted to add my 2 cents to maybe help clarify something for those of you doing research. This box gives you 2 options to connect to your computer, USB 2.0 and eSATA. Both have pluses and minuses:

USB 2.0 will autimatically recognize all your drives and each will show up as a separate drive letter. However transfer speeds will be about 1/2 what you'd get with eSATA. I'm getting an average of 30MB/s both to drives in my computer and between drives in the box.

eSATA will only recognize the first hdd you install unless your computer supports port multiplying, most do not. I have a fairly new computer with a very high end MB and it does not, so unless you check and see it in writing don't assume yours does. You will need an add on card to give you this functionality, most plug into PCIe slots but PCIx and PCI cards are also available, they run $30-60 on average. The advantages of eSATA with port multiplying are twofold. First your transfer speeds are at least double USB. I'm getting an average of 60MB/s with peaks over 100MB/s. Second I believe you will be able to manage all your hdds under a single Drive letter, so instead of 4 separate smaller drives you'll see 1 large drive. I'm not positive about this however.

Overall I think this is a great product.

This thing functions as described.. I plugged it into a 10 port hub and the PC failed to recognize it.. When I plugged it directly in to the PC it worked. The shell is very strong.. The trays are a little cheap. A locking latch would have been preferable to screws to secure the drive within the tray. Also the power button is on the rear which is annoying because I have this on a shelf. I have had no other issues. Overall... Happy..

In concept, a very neat drive array enclosure . . . minimal drive trays allow maximum air flow . . . huge fan pulls air over all four drives equally.
eSATA works well with Startech #PEXESAT322I SATA 6 Gbps eSATA Controller Card SATA III. Nice example of industrial design, from an aesthetic view!

However, within a year, the fan stopped working reliably and two LEDs on the controller card crapped out. Computer lockups were caused by overheated hard drives.

Company requires that you send the entire unit back for repair. Didn't want the down time, so I asked them to send a controller board so I could swap it out (easy to do with a screw driver). Second board worked for a few months, then fan stopped working. Swapped back in the original controller board and fan worked for a few more weeks, but eventually computer locked up frequently.

Decided to request a warranty return authorization & send the entire unit back at a US Postal cost of $18. Not a big deal . . . get it done right, as they originally recommended. Took a day or two for IcyDock to approve my request, based also on the prior issue.

Meanwhile, eSATA controller card was removed and the two essential hard drives were reinstalled in the Dell T3600 workstation (C: drive Windows 7 & F:\DATA). Totally reliable, no issues, can't blame the computer or the drives.

Quick turnaround from Connecticut to the west coast and back, about a week each way.

Reinstalled the controller card & IcyCube. Everything worked fine, LEDs nice and bright. They replaced both the controller card and the power supply. However, I noticed the fan wasn't spinning after a short time. . . I was running antivirus scans, so there was intensive drive activity.

It worked great as my media server on the mac for 2 years. Suddenly, my computers took forever to recognize folders within it. It was used primarily as a plex server. Now, its a paperweight. Maybe tech support can tell me why the computer will no longer access anything properly...most of the time.
