Editorial Reviews

Quadrophenia has got to be one of The Who's most widely recognized albums. As a companion piece to last year's Black Friday release, The Quadrophenia Demos 1, we get The Quadrophenia Demos 2! It's enthralling to hear what Pete Townshend created by himself without the rest of The Who. And while the rest of the band may have added balls to the sound, Townshend's demos are pretty fully fleshed out. The EP features demo versions of "I've Had Enough," "Drowned," "Is It Me," "Dr. Jimmy" and "Love Reign O'er Me." Limited edition 10" vinyl.

Since the early 1980s, Who guitarist Pete Townshend has released a series of albums that present his home recordings, or "demos," for the band. "Scoop," "Another Scoop," "Scoop 3" and the "best-of" "Scooped" have featured songs loved by millions of fans, such as "Pinball Wizard," "Behind Blue Eyes" and "Bargain." By my count, though, only a handful of those songs were pieces that ended up on the band's 1973 "Quadrophenia" album.

With the release of the "Director's Cut" of "Quadrophenia" in 2011, though, the dam burst -- that lavish package includes quite a few of Townshend's demo recordings for the project. I declined to purchase it, however, because the "Director's Cut" does not include a complete surround-sound mix -- only a few of the Who's finished songs are offered in 5.1 channels.

But I wanted to hear the demos. This disc is a curiosity, really -- a "limited edition" 10-inch vinyl EP, or "Extended Play." And it's Volume 2; the first volume included demos of songs such as "The Dirty Jobs" and "The Real Me."

Volume 1 was quite enjoyable enough, but Volume 2 is absolutely terrific, partly all five songs on it ended up being such crucial pieces of "Quadrophenia." "I've Had Enough" expresses the angst of a young "mod" feeling trapped not only by oppressive "society" but also his own dissolute life. "Drowned" isn't a suicide or death-by-misadventure song but rather a very clever love song. "Is It Me" is the most dispensable track here, but I've always loved the melody.

"Dr. Jimmy" is one of the Who's finest achievements, an anthem of pain, substance abuse, mental illness and generalized rage.
