Please note that the provided materials state that the velcro weakens after several times of fastening and unfastening (I can't remember the exact number of times, perhaps 20), so this may not be a good solution for you if you will regularly need to undo the velcro and reposition your furniture. It doesn't affect me, but it's something to be aware of with this type of fastener.
For furniture use as shown, I would give it 5-stars.
I trust that the shear strength of the velcro is enough to support my furniture in the event of an earthquake or even a child climbing on it. The fact that there isn't much space for it to move to gain any real momentum makes it seem safe. Note that the instructions do warn that pull the velcro apart many times will decease it's holding ability (but I think it spoke of something like 25 separations).
Overall, I feel much safer with these in our dresser, with two young children around. It seems to me that these two straps would holding more strongly than the steel wire and screws that came with the furniture. Since those attach my a small screw into the top rail of the back of the furniture, it just doesn't seem that secure--either the screw into the furniture or that rail seem like they might give.
