In use, one holds the unit in the right hand and the hapless letter in the left hand, and pulls the unit towards oneself, cutting the end of the envelope open in the process. With business envelopes in good condition, this does work reasonably well. But many envelopes are neither in good condition nor made of good enough (and thick enough) paper, and the cutter bunches the paper up and jams when attempting to start the cut, or merely scores the paper but fails to cut the envelope open.
I suppose in a business, it could be useful as the envelopes are likely to be more suited for this kind of letter opener, and the ceramic blades should prove durable.
Anyway, I've reverted to the traditional razor blade in oval plastic handle opener: <http://www.amazon.com/Baumgartens-Envelope-Slitter-Assorted-67130/dp/B0009FTZVQ/ref=sr_1_4?s=office-products&ie=UTF8&qid=1293816336&sr=1-4>.
Ergonomically stupid, and the magnet is on a convex surface, giving only a point contact.

This Opener just doesn't cut it. Pun intended. It simply does not open regular envelopes on the first or even second try. :o(Published on April 23, 2013 by BullWertz5
This works well for awhile then just stops. It is almost as if the ceramic blade gets dull and moves around in the slot. Read morePublished on December 13, 2012 by J. Zwicker
