Quantum reality is science's elephant in the room. Many modern scientists plug along with research according to the outmoded classical view of reality, totally ignoring the unfathomably bizarre ramifications of quantum findings. Not only does QR have revolutionary implications for physics; its probability waves will eventually ripple throughout the world, transforming our understanding of the cosmos, society, and personal identity. That quantum reality and its paradigm-shifting implications are not in the forefront of our cultural zeitgeist only underscores how ignorant and myopic most people are.

Herbert's Quantum Reality was published back in 1985. It's become a classic popular introduction to the subject. It does a great job explaining the strangeness of quantum reality and how it departs from the classical worldview, and it offers a lucid description of 8 possible interpretations of quantum reality. Given the strangeness of the quantum world, maybe all 8 interpretations are correct!

Sometimes Herbert goes beyond an introductory work and gets technical in his detailed explanations of experiments, but the book is generally accessible and contains no dizzying math. I wish philosophical implications figured more heavily into the work, however I guess there's only so much one can say given that the mechanics of quantum reality are still a mystery.

Herbert fed my curiosity, but in the feeding, he only made my appetite 1,000 times greater. I must dive deeper down the rabbit hole!

An Excellent Quantum Theory Introduction

This is an excellent introduction to quantum mechanics. The writer gives only as much history as necessary, but focuses on interpreting the meaning of the theory, using a variety of analogies and alternative framing a to make sure the reader can understand the implications. Of particular note are the chapter on his 'synthesizer theorem' stating that waveforms do not need to be of the 'sin' form but rather any measurement can be thought of as have its own unique pattern, he then uses this to illustrate the implications for the uncertainty principle. There is also two chapters on interpretations of quantum mechanics, focusing on the 'measurement problem' and uncertainty. The book then proceeds to explain the EPR paradox, Bells Theorem, entanglement and its implications. The age of the book seems to have little impact on its usefulness. Highly recommended.

Read this, and see how weird reality really is!

I really enjoyed the book. I think you'd need a least some scientific background, but no math, to understand the wave analysis and harmonic vibration modes, to get the most out of the book. It's one of the few I still pick up and review from time to time.

What really got me is that for a brief, fleeting instant, I actually felt like I glimpsed just how weird quantum reality is. That the wave functions for particles can be analyzed into component waveforms, that these waveforms correspond to different properties of particles. That they aren't necessarily just sine waves (ala FFT), but that every wave shape corresponds to some elusive property -- it blows me away. Reading the book actually gives one a whole new perspective on the universe, one of incredulity or dread or hopelessness or hopefulness.

There are some tedious aspects to it. Mainly, different interpretations of quantum theory are presented as lists of long descriptions. There are several such redundant lists of dry material that can put one to sleep.

Richard Feynman noted that no-one understands Quantum Mechanics. OK. If you want a virtual understanding, this book is a great start. It is easy to read, easier to read than other books mentioned by reviewers, and you come out of it feeling you at least understand something of Quantum Mechanics. I enjoyed it so much I summarized my notes, so I could have my understanding of it on a few pages. I do that only with the best books I read. There is a very little bit of mathematics, but for those of us who didn't take 4 years of college level math, this is very understandable. I've also seen this book cited in other books that present Quantum Mechanics in simple terms. Since QM is replacing the Newtonian paradigm that our society is built on, this book is well worth reading. I wish I'd run across it in high school, I'd have read it as carefully as I read Lord of the Rings.

I really like how the author puts a lot of effort explaining difficult aspects in a simple way. Although being a physicist with good understanding of univeristy-taught quantum mechanics I really liked the original analogies which helped me develop better view, for eample, on the quantum measurement problem.
Text is very well writen and with difficult passes explained several times from different directions which is great when learning about state-of-the-art physics concepts.
The only thing I didn't particularly like is occational repetition of content in different chapters.

One year ago I wrote a review and gave four stars to this book. Now I have decided to change it to 5 starts, because I have realized how much this book taught me on the basic concepts of Quantum Theory. Unfortunately, I do not see how to change the rating. Now I can detect lots of misunderstandings in other books. The explanation of concepts in terms of "filters", complementarity, etc, are brilliant. I have kept below my old review, that is still valid, but I think now that the positive part is much bigger than I first thought.

This book gives a very good description of the different interpretations of "reality" (or its denial) after the arrival of the Quantum Theory. The interpretations are grouped in eight categories, with explanations of its strengths, weaknesses and main supporters. Bell's theorem constitutes the core of the book.

The book is rigurous, well written, and you finish with a clear view of the subject. The only problems that I have found is certain bias of the author against Copenhagen's interpretation and unnecessary complexity of several examples. Apart from that, it is a very good book.
