4.5 Stars: A New Way to Look at Dice

This is a really cool game conceptually and susbtantially easier to learn than something like Pandemic or more complicated strategy games, without being "dumbed down" too much. Each dice represents not a movement per se — as with nearly all other dice games — but a ship type with specifc capabilities including movement capabilities. The ships in turn can do things only on certain parts of the game board, in order to get to the ultimate goal of populating planets. And most interestingly, there are many variants of the game board because it's built on moveable tiles. So depending on how much time you have and/or how many people you have playing, you can customize the board's "shape" in order to make the game more strategic or more of a "blitz". So far we've really enjoyed it in 2-player mode. Highly recommended.

Simple to learn, but still maintains dynamic gameplay

Quantum is chess in space with changeable pieces and cool special abilities. I'm not a big chess player, but I'm always down for a game of quantum. The rules are simple, but the game design is brilliant in that its simple moves can combo into more complex sequences. Quantum provides plenty of opportunities to feel accomplished and proud for taking those extra 10 seconds to think it through and end up with an epic turn.

Recommended for:
People who enjoy strategy games
Open ended thinkers who enjoy using both their analysis and creative sides of their brains.

Not recommended for:
Times when you just want to get drunk and not think too much
Players who want a 100% skill game. Despite the comparison to chess and because of its dice rolling, I'd approximate Quantum has about a 30% luck element in the game.

This is currently my favorite board game, and I highly recommend

Great 2-4 player sci-fi board game.

I have played it with 2 and 3 players. The game scales well, and the components are awesome.

The key mechanism, using dice as ships, works very well. The value is your ship's movement, so bigger numbers are faster. But lower numbers are more powerful in battle, so it pays to have a variety of ship values available.

You combine ship values around planets to exactly match the planet's value. If you do so, you can place a quantum cube on that planet. Once you place all of yours, you win.

Simple rules make for little down time, and unique cards that can be earned make the game different each time you play.

I am really glad I bought this game. The components are not stellar, but they are still good quality. Definitely would purchase again.

This is a thinking person's game with a good random element that let's it have some variety. Also, the modular board allows different games with different strategies all the time. This quickly became one of my favorite board games.

Some would argue that there are balancing issues with some of the cards... I don't disagree that some of them are more powerful than others, but that makes it more fun in my opinion. There may be a card that, in most cases, is relatively useless, but it counters that really powerful gambit or command card that no one else knows how to deal with. Just good fun.

This game has the benefit of being easy to learn yet challenging to play. There is some chance in this game (for example, rolling dice for doing battle) but there is a great deal of strategy. We played on the "basic" board layout first time out of the box and were almost immediately up to speed and having fun. The game board can be changed as often as you play, and the layout can differ for different numbers of players. It is definitely not going to be the same game wice.

This is an awesome game, but be warned, it is also quite strategic. A lot of thought and planning into potential moves during your turn will make the strategy and outcomes quite satisfying, and the game plays rather quickly for the strategic depth it offers. While it is simple enough for anyone to play, it isn't a casual or party game. If your friends or family are comfortable playing games like Settlers of Catan, however, I'm sure you'll find this game quite enjoyable.

Simple, Deep, Fun, a masterpiece of design

This game is a masterpiece of design. From almost shockingly simple mechanics high level strategy can arise, but it's tempered from becoming chess-like by the use of a few die rolls here and there. It would be a pretty good choice to introduce non-gamers to the idea that board games are more than Monopoly, while maintaining appeal to serious fans of tabletop gaming.

I suggest you watch the excelent review of it on Shut Up And Sit Down, but in brief the players control ships, represented by dice, moving around a modular board engaging in combat and attempting to claim planets. Claiming a planet is not just a matter of fighting rivals, but also getting the right ships in orbit. Players must budget their limited number of actions per turn to gain the greatest advantage, and make clever use of the special abilities each class of ship possess. Supporting 2-4 players, and myriad layouts with modular board tiles it offers amazing replay value. It is simple, deep and elegant throughout. If you admire good mechanics you will love this game.

I have some minor complaints about the quality of the components. The infamous sticky dice problem has been fixed by now, but a couple of my dice are still not perfect, at least one has a pip noticeably misplaced. (Any worries about the trueness of the dice are mitigated by the relative rarity of rolling in this game, dice are mostly used with a particular side facing up to indicate a value) While the player-boards are of excellent material I was a little disappointed in the planet tiles, they just feel a little cheap. And when it comes to paper, the manual is printed on amazing stock, but I thought the two small decks or cards felt a little thin and flimsy. It's just a bit inconsistent. Perhaps one thing like this I could have ignored, but there are several.

The game is so good I have to give it five stars even with those component quality concerns. I'm eagerly awaiting anything else from the designer.
