In this follow-up to ‘After the End’ I was expectingmore Zombie v. Vampire action, with a little romance thrown in; that’s almost exactly what I got. The romance was a little heavier in this installment and was enjoyable. Most of the Nova Nocte, all the vampires and many of the humans, are heading north to Canada. According to Reggie, a fellow vampire and friend of Cal, the Zombie outbreak is only in North and South America; everything will be normal again soon…
Squirrel, Cal, Damon, and the rest of the Nova Nocte are still surviving. It’s year two of the outbreak and the group wants out of the quarantine zone. Luckily the Roman knows a guy, so they can get out. They just need to make to the border without getting eaten by zombies or killing each other. Along the trail to the edge of the quarantine the group encounters several trials, all of which test or even challenge they’re humanity. They meet new friends and new enemies, as well
losing some of both. Melissa Gibbo did a very good job of juggling the drama and gore of the zombie with the paranormal romance aspect of the story, which becomes more prominent as you listen. I’m not complaining, it’s not my genre preference but it’s well written and requisite. The zombie action in the novel is great; Ms. Gibbo paints some rather vivid pictures with her words. Rather it’s describing scenery and sensations, or Squirrel fighting off a horde of zombies, the author delivers.
Piper Lewis is back for the narration and she did not disappoint. She is a fairly new narrator and has a talent for voices; they were all easy to distinguish and she read a good pace. Lewis has already improved since Nova Nocte book one and I look forward to hearing more of her.
Having to rely on a bunch of blood sucking vampires to get out of it!
In Quarantined in Chaos (Nova Nocte Book2), the story of Squirrel and her band of dead (and undead) survivors continues. Trekking from Florida to Canada is no easy task, even without battling a horde of zombies. Quarantined in Chaos overflows with all of the challenges and carnage you’d expect in a Zombie survival and vampire tale, plus plenty more that you wouldn’t.
I, for one, can’t wait for the next installment in the Nova Nocte series!
