I had no idea what to expect from this new to me (and I think new overall) author, but I was completely blown away by this book. It was so, so good!!!
This book features Matt. He's a senior in his last year at the very conservative college where he has a full football scholarship. He's spent the last three years not hooking up at all because he can't lose that scholarship. His dad is a class-A jerk and if he finds out Matt is gay, not only will he cut off all financial support, but Matt will also lose his small ability to protect his 17 yo twin sisters from his wrath. Matt is on the edge of making all his goals. He just has to survive one more celibate year.
But Matt's best friends aren't stupid, so they set up a massage with a plan for him to let loose some of the tension he's been storing. The issue...they don't give Matt any warning and he's completely shocked when the gorgeous guy giving him a massage takes things past where it's comfortable...especially since said masseuse is gorgeous and turning Matt on.
Trevor and Matt were in a freshman class together, and both of them were attracted way back then. Trevor has his own issues. His parents disowned him and he's doing everything he can to stay above water with three different jobs. Trevor has never paid any attention to the football program. He's just not that interested, until Matt and he start circling one another.
This book was everything good and romantic. I loved these two guys. Matt is in a no-win situation. If anyone finds out about him, he's screwed, but everything is so good with Trevor. He just doesn't have the self-control to stay away. And Trevor gets that...he does, but Matt is a high profile athlete. It's hard to see him with women all the time when Trevor wants nothing more than to scream from the rooftops that Matt is his.
I loved this book. It's easily one of the best books I've read this year. It was sweet and romantic and hot and funny. Everything about it was perfection and I HIGHLY recommend it! It was GREAT!
I received a complimentary copy of this book in return for an honest review.
I can say with absolutely certainty that I just read my favorite read of this year, ya’ll!!! I had a mad case of the goofy grins and the happy sighs, and when I’m done writing this review, I’m going to experience it all over again.
Come-out stories hold a special place in my heart, and Mackenzie Blair’s The Quarterback was getting such resounding buzz on my feed that I put other books on hold so I could get started ASAP. I wasn’t prepared for the complete touchdown this debut novel was. From the witty and charming banter, to the super adorable heroes that will make your heart melt, to the uproarious cast of secondary characters. This is on my must read list this year.
Our hero is Matt Lancaster, the football god in a small, ultra-conservative college in the deep South. And he’s so deep in the closet, he has his eyes closed. To keep his scholarship and realize his National Championship dreams, Matt keeps his preferences bottled up tight. The last thing he expects is to find himself under the wonderfully hypnotic hands of a punk-rock dressing, eyebrow-pierced hottie masseuse. One who is offering up more than a massage. Soon, Matt finds himself breaking his rules and pushing aside his fears for every. Single. Scorching. Moment.
If only there wasn’t so much on the line.
I don’t want to give much away so I’m just going to boil it down to this. There is so much depth to each of these characters, so many sides that open them up and make you feel hard and fast. I laughed my way through Matt’s flirty comments and Trevor’s bold overtures. I held my breath as secrets threaten to come out. I growled at the injustices both of these men have to deal with. And the chemistry…it crackles in the air and made the hair on my arms stand on end. It just sizzles.
And that’s not touching on the phenomenal writing, emotion that bombards you at every turn and makes you want to stand up and cheer, as well as the stunning secondary cast that are just so real you can feel them. (Side note: Drew? Story??? *begs*)
I absolutely loved this book! This author is going on my must-read, auto-buy list. So do I recommend it? Heck, yes. In fact, if you’re going to read one book this year, please, please make it this one.
