For twenty years, the author has contested the 'establishment' view of quasars as the most distant objects in the universe. In this book, Arp presents the original observations and fundamental data on quasars and galaxies, and explains why he has concluded that: far from being the most distant objects in the universe, quasars are associated in space with relatively nearby galaxies; quasars' enormous redshifts do not arise from the expansion of the universe, but rather are intrinsic properties of the quasars themselves; many galaxies show redshift anomalies related to quasars' redshifts; quasars and galaxies have an origin far different from that assumed in the 'standard' big-bang model of the universe; many astronomers, despite the accumulation of compelling evidence, defend what Arp believes is a fundamentally incorrect assumption about cosmic objects.

Good book for the history lesson on Halton Arp

First and foremost, if you want a good read on Halton Arp's ideas on quasars etc., get his book Seeing Red: Redshifts, Cosmology and Academic Science . It is better written and contains more updated information than this book.

I bought this book primarily because I wanted to see what the story was on his being denied telescope time on the Hale 200 inch at Palomar Observatory, which is not supplied in the other book. However there is much that is good in this book also. Since he and Fred Hoyle were good friends we find many references to Hoyle. One quote by Hoyle in particular that I liked is that "the establishment defends itself by complicating everything to the point of incomprehensibility". Considering that Hoyle is extremely knowledgeable, that is quite a statement.

Of course most of the book deals with his pet theme of intrinsic redshifts debunking Big Bang cosmology. In my opinion his best argument against velocity redshift is not the high z of quasars supposedly ejected from the centers of active galaxies, so much as the data that shows companion galaxies of M31 all being red shifted. Actually according to Arp all of the companion galaxies around large central central galaxy groups are red shifted. If you know anything about astronomy you know that that is a huge problem for conventional velocity only redshift.

It is a shame that Arp was treated as badly as he was at Cal-tech, and I have to wonder if Cal-tech will ever issue an apology like the one the Catholic Church did in 2000 to Galileo and others that it persecuted and burned at the stake.

As a YEC and Born Again Christian I read many "science" books to see what theories are being put forth as science, that are in reality no less dogma than found in any other religious system of beliefs. Even though Arp may be (as far as I can tell) and atheist (as I used to be) and believer in evolution, we have something in common when we point out that those who are supposed to be upholding science are doing nothing of the sort.

I was introduced to Halton's excellent work through a mutual friend, Dr. Tom Van Flandern. Both luminaries have now passed on, but their bold alternate views of the way the universe just may actually work are with us forever. I liked this book and found it highly thought-provoking. Every inquiring mind focused on alternative cosmological theories should seek out texts such as Halton's and Van Flandern's. They could well be right in at least some of aspect of their BB-competitive thinking.

Since he wrote this book, there has been much more evidence accumulated to support his work. He mentions others who, before the time that he wrote this book, have came to similar conclusions, and shows you how to reference those earlier papers.

As an amateur, I read that book many, many years ago, --- but I lost it. I was always interested in astronomy, especially in the works of Halton ARP and Margareth and Geoffrey BURBIDGE.

This is one of the saddest and least coherent books I have read, not only because of the clear gut-wrenching disappointment oozing from every paragraph, but also because his lack of recognition appears to have seriously interfered with his scientific professionalism. This makes the book very difficult to follow and understand what he is trying to say! Before going on, let me list a few developments in Astronomy that have occurred in the last 30 years since Arp's research.
* Digital photography (since 1990s)
* Hubble space telescope (1990)
* Adaptive optics, eg on Keck and other telescopes including the Mt Palomar telescope (in late 1990 ant after) where Arp did some of his work
* Very large aperture telescopes (now greater than 10 m - 4 times the light gathering at Mt Palomar)
* Vastly improved radio astronomy especially pointing accuracy
* Large scale interferometry, eg, on Keck that uses huge base lines
* Type I SNa correlation to help better measure and calibrate distance
* Much better spectrum analysis deep into the infrared and ultraviolet and beyond

The above developments have meant that several things have become known since Arp's research:
* Much higher resolution and many fainter objects discovered and much more of them
* Galaxies with high red shifts now up to 11.9 - twice that known to Arp
* Many more galaxies have been discovered - probably 100 to 1000 times as many as Arp knew
* Much greater photo resolution showing that many of the quasars that Arp discusses are actually not associated with the galaxies he claims
* Quasars are mostly (not always) the result of a super-massive black hole at the centre of an early galaxy with huge jets being ejected perpendicular to an accretion disc. The physics of this is still being discovered but much is still clear. The analytic models of sub-Eddington accretion discs gives rise to advection dominated flows. By contrast, super-Eddington accretion discs give rise to "Polish Doughnuts". All this depends upon the magneto-rotational instability and how it creates the jets that create quasars.
* Discovery of the Lyman alpha forest (1990s) - a remarkably piece of physics allowing the calculation of how many hydrogen clouds the light has passed through before reaching earth
* The ability to photograph the galaxy associated with a quasar despite the overwhelming glare of the quasar

Unfortunately, this all means that vastly more data is now available that makes Arp's research outdated and redundant. Not that all questions have been resolved - there are now more questions than Arp posited. This, Arp's research is somewhat dated and rather sad for such a capable and brilliant astronomer. This book is now an interesting piece of history but does not contribute anything to astonomy or physics.

Halton Arp (the author) is an experienced astronomer who has not always found favor with those in control of his science. His views should be considered by every student in astronomy as well as professional astronomers. An increasing number of people today are coming to view Cosmology as more of a religious cult than a real science, in which scientists with vested interests seem more interested in defending their positions than in examining them. The Chandra telescope is being used to search for Black Holes; it could as well be searching for angels.
Although I do not share Halton Arp's view on the Big Bang I believe his views on Quasars are worth serious consideration.
