Editorial Reviews

Italys creative piano virtuoso Stefano Bollani meets Hamilton de Holanda, Brazils peerless master of the bandolim, the 10-string mandolin. O que sera is a summery celebration of the joy of music-making, radiating an irresistible enthusiasm, and raising the bar for trans-idiomatic instrumental interaction. Bollani, acknowledged as one of the most prodigiously-gifted soloists of jazz, is matched every step of the way here by de Holanda, and the exchanges between the musicians are frequently breath-taking. Repertoire draws upon the rich heritage of South American music including Jobim, Piazzolla, Chico Buarque, Baden Powell, Ernesto Nazareth and more, plus original compositions by the protagonists. . O que sera was recorded live in Antwerp last August before an audibly-delighted audience at the Jazz Middelheim Festival.

I have been a fan of ECM since the late seventies. Many of us youngsters grew up as ECM was showcasing new talent, and we incorporated hundreds of these fine artists into our collections, into our lives.
Gismonti, Art Ensemble of Chicago, Ralph Towner, Dino Saluzzi, Keith Jarrett certainly, Tomasz Stanko, the early Pat Metheny, Gary Burton. As a southamerican, I have grown distant from the label as there has been an excessive amount of scandinavian/northern european releases, many of them pretty unremarkable, really. So it is a pleasure to report that I love this recording.
Hamilton de Holanda is an amazing musician, a virtuoso really. He is well know all over the world by now. The kind of player that put in the time as a child and teenager playing the rich, diverse folk music of his native Brasil. And for a while now has expanded into more modern forms of improvisation.
Bollani here feels at home and his music feels less cerebral that in other efforts (Stefano even sings in one of the tunes!). He has played brazilian music for many years now, including some of his own releases.
Their love of Jobim, Hermeto Pascoal and Egberto Gismonti becomes obvious in this fine ECM live date. Piazzolla's Oblivion sounds touching as always. The fine, complex songs of Chico Buarque de Holanda are given a fine treatment as well. This is the beauty of the brazilian songbook. They have many interesting chord changes and harmonies, you can listen to them in the radio while riding a taxi, AND they give more than enough material for improvisers to have fun with.
I really hope that there will be more of these releases. The music is complex, the unison runs are breathtaking, and I am thankful that we get to take a break from the usual somber scandinavian sound ECM has relied on so heavily in the last 20 years.
You will love this CD.

I received shipment of this CD from Amazon this afternoon, and so far tonight I have listened to it twice all the way through. On the first listen, I was most impressed by how well the disc was recorded and by the utter excellence of the musicianship. On the second listen, I was even more impressed by the musicianship, and became even more interested in the music itself, which is enjoyable.

And let me re-emphasize how good the recorded sound is. In my opinion, this is the best record--both musically and with regard to sound-quality--that I have experienced from the ECM label. A nice, naturally warm sound.

I also want to recommend the CD that was in my CD player before today. The title is Creole Nocturne, by Tom McDermott and Connie Jones. This one is arguably even better recorded than the excellent ECM disc.

Both of these are great CDs.

I'd read good reviews of this cd. However, I was interested in how successfully a cerebral pianist like Stephano Bollani would interact solely with a bandolim player, Hamilton De Holanda, who I had never heard of and assumed was from the Astor Piazzola school of bandolim playing. It turned out to be a pleasant surprise. Bollani is Bollani on this outing, as evidenced by his sensitive play on "Luiza," whereas De Holanda is a revelation. The latter's playing on this disc has none of the tango grounding of Piazzola. De Holanda instead plays intense, complex, firey rhythm as exemplified by his work on "Guarda Che Luna" and the remarkable "Canto De Ossanna." Together, the two musicians interact beautifully playing off and supporting each other exceptionally well. "Apanhei - Te Cavaquinho" particularly exemplifies this. My guessing game is over. Interested potential listeners should set aside any concerns they may have and simply enjoy this incredible effort, as the crowd at this live performance clearly did.

Though there's nothing wrong with ECM's northern "somber scandinavian" catalogue, I still find pleasure, immense pleasure with this record O Que Sera. It just goes to show that Manfred, even though his preferences are obvious, is a sufficiently adventurous man to take on the latin playground, too (there is evidence dating back to the 1970's, and beautiful evidence it is).
This is a very lovely record in conservative terms. No frontier-jumping, here. Just plain lovely. Good for an easy listening cocktail on Friday night. You feel the fun the musicians had at recording. Enjoy!
