I was looking through some of the free ebooks on Amazon and found this one. I hadn't read this author before so I decided to try out one of her books. I live in Las Vegas so I'm usually excited to find stories set here but this one just didn't hit home with me. This book is a novella and even knowing that, I felt that the author tried to put too much into too few pages.
While there were smoldering looks, flirting and even a couple of kisses...there was no sex. Not one sex scene. It was kind of a let down for me. This didn't feel like a romance book to me at all and I think a chance was missed to make it better.
The other thing that bothered me was the fact that Claude retired from Sin City Collectors but according to her and her bosses you never really get to retire completely and if they suspect you turned traitor on them or break the rules, you can and will be punished. So then why did she ask for her new boyfriend to be a collector? Why would she want someone else to be in a job they can never really get out of, is dangerous and that you could be severely punished from if you mess up bad enough.
Some things just don't make sense and if it doesn't seem believable then it detracts from the story which is what happened in this one for me.
I did really like Claude and Jason's characters and thought the chemistry between them was awesome. The sparks flew right away. I even felt bad for Jason with all he'd had to endure over the past 2 years at the hands of Sloan.
Maybe it's because this is a novella that I didn't feel like there was much world building and didn't feel connected to what was happening around them. They are in Las Vegas but we don't really feel that from the story being told. But if you're looking for a quick flirty read, this might be the book for you.
Jason is being blackmailed by Sloan, into doing horrible things because Sloan has his keystone. The one thing that makes gargoyles vulnerable. Once Claudette knows the truth she promises to help Jason. This ticks off her real boss though and there is a lot of tension. If she cannot prove that Jason is innocent both of them will die.
Claudette is a strong gal, who has a heart. She is likeable although the instant trust in Jason was a bit much considering paranormals are supposed to be weary by nature. Jason is a nice guy and it sucks to see him in the positions that Sloan puts him in. He has no choice but to do Sloan’s bidding.
I adored the first in the series, Aces Wild. This novella was written by a different author than the first. I loved how she stays within the world that Amanda Carson created for us in the first book. Although, I do wish there was a bit more action and a little more romance in this release. Hopefully, Ante Up which releases soon will literally ante up in those departments.
My Rating 3 out of 5 stars
Favorite Quote “You try to steal either of our souls and I will shred you like junk mail.”
Sloan- the evil mastermind
Romero- Claudette’s point of contact
Ares- Wraith sent to bring both Claudette and Jason in

This novella centres around Claudette (a semi-retired Collector) and Jason, a gargoyle who's being forced to carry out criminal activity by a sorcerer who has his keystone. I loved Claudette and Jason, the story was fast paced and engrossing! I was routing for them both to get a happy ending!
They didn't have the history that the previous couple did but they had a very strong and instant attraction! I like that we get a little epilogue at the end to let us know how their relationship progresses 6 months down the line! I really liked getting that little peek. I was really intrigued by their supernatural types as well, this series so far has featured some less known and used supernatural types alongside the more known ones! I'm very intrigued by a character we met briefly near the end, Aries, a wraith that I hope will get a book of his own!
I'm really looking forward to the next in the series Ante Up by Amanda Carlson due out later this month with another contribution from Kristen Painter to follow this year! This is shaping up to be an excellent series and well worth picking up!
