The opening dynamics between Nala and her stepsister, Shazila, reminds me a bit of Cinderella. And Nala's aunt, Naimah, reminds me of Cinderella's wicked stepmother. And yet, with Tyler's careful world-building, all of the characters feel very real. There is so much that happens in this short and lovely novel. It's part fairy tale, part history and yet all truth telling. You will fall in love with Nala and her son Matai. And in the opening you will practically be able to taste the cassava tea.
Come sip this novel. You will not be disappointed!
This book from stylistic standpoint reminded me of another book I recently read. Stephen King's "11/22/63" took the historical event of President John F. Kennedy being assassinated and blended it with fantasy to create a gripping page-turner. Angela has pulled off a similar feat of bringing a college professor's attention to historical detail with masterful story-telling.
I strongly encourage any readers of this review to immediately purchase the book. You won't regret it and will want to encourage others to do the same.
QUEEN MOTHER is a quick, easy, and worthwhile read. I enjoyed QUEEN MOTHER tremendously, and look forward to more from this talented author.

I have fallen in love with Angela Norton Tyler's
"Queen Mother", just as I did for J.California Cooper's "Some Soul To Keep" and
Bertice Berry's "Redemption Song"!
