Queen Victoria, Her Life and Reign: A Study of British Monarchical Institutions and the Queen's Personal Career, Foreign Policy, and Imperial Influence (Classic Reprint) Hardcover – August 24, 2018

Words cannot express the pride I feel as an Englishman in the loyalty of Canada to England. Nevertheless, I should be the first to deplore this feeling if it rendered Canada disloyal to herself, if it dwarfed or smothered Canadian patriotism, or generated a sickly spirit of dependence. Such, however, is far from being the case. The legislation of your parliament, the attitude of your statesmen, the language of your press sufficiently show how firmly and intelligently you are prepared to accept and apply the almost unlimited legislative faculties with which you have been endowed - while the daily growing disposition to extinguish sectional jealousies, and to ignore an obsolete provincialism, proves how strongly the young heart of your confederated commonwealth has begun to throb with the consciousness of its nationalized existence. At this moment not a shilling of British money finds its way to Canada, the interference of the Home Government with the domestic affairs of the Dominion has ceased, while the Imperial relations between the two countries are regulated by a spirit of such mutual deference, forbearance, and moderation, as reflects the greatest credit on the statesmen of both.

One of the issues I had with the book was the absence of any footnotes, although there are numerous letters within the text accredited to different people, giving a personal flavor to the history. The other issue was that the author sometimes wrote as if readers knew the history of the people he would refer to in the book. It was as if folks in 19th century England would be the only readers of his work, and he must not have dreamed the book would be in print 125 years later.
I will caution prospective readers that the author’s text is extremely favorable to Queen Victoria. With such a long reign, one would expect there would be a blemish here or there, but you can’t tell that from Mr. Hopkins book. In fact, about the only negative words you will find are those people who expressed opinions that differed from the Queen’s.
Once the history reached 1887, the author decided to devote numerous chapters to other subjects (sometimes related, sometimes barely linked together). There were individual chapters about the Queen and India, South Africa, and Australasia; chapters included “The Queen At Home,” “Her Majesty’s Friends and Contemporaries,” and “The Prince of Wales.” Much of the information had either been covered in previous chapters, or would have made more sense to include in those chapters. Americans might find it interesting to read the chapter “The Queen and the United States,” which can be categorized as historically humorous when viewed under the light of today.
All in all, it is not the stuffy, hard-to-read text that you occasionally find in an older book. The author has a rolling style, and if the book slows at all, it is because of the unending inclusion of every little fact Mr. Hopkins could insert. You will receive a thorough picture of Queen Victoria in this book, although the author’s feel-good approach may compel you to read another book, just to achieve balance. Three stars.
