This book was professionally researched from numerous primary and secondary sources, written, and published by Hourly History. This publishing house has produced an extensive collection of thoroughly researched, concise, informative, and well written historical texts designed to be read in one to two hours. This historical collection is focused on chronicling the lives of important historical persons, key events, nations, and peoples. I have read a number of their offerings and found each volume well written, researched, informative and presented with an unbiased perspective.
This book was well researched and written. It was presented to provide the information in a concise manner. I found that it explained a very complex person and the actions she took, in a remarkably clear and understandable manner. Further, it promotes a better understanding of the history that shaped Great Britain and the English speaking world. Readers who enjoy history and biographies, or those who are interested in knowing more about Queen Victoria and her influence on British history, will enjoy this book.
Although the Victorian age was a period of Industrial and scientific change and expansion of the British empire, I was surprised to learn how much influence her husband Prince Albert had and the amount of time Queen Victoria took off.
I enjoyed this concise book because it also gives us an insight into her character- she was obstinate and her behavior could be considered erratic at times.
It was a fast read with enough detail and humanity to be remembered. In this day and age where most don't have the privilege to retreat away from the world to read--, it's a welcome platform. My one small objection, if I may, I would have liked to have a little more description surrounding some of the events. .I look forward to reading more from Hourly History.
Creativity Business Plan for Artists and Artists at Heart: A Step by Step guide from discovery to implementation of your Creative Potential
The only thing I didn't like about the book is that it sometimes didn't follow a straight timeline -- in the middle of a chapter it would go back 20 years so that I would have to go back to previous chapters to make sense of it. This is the only reason I rated this book 4 stars instead of 5. Basically I enjoyed he book very much.
The main things I came away with from this book was the child abuse Victoria and Albert endured as children was likewise inflicted on their own children in many ways. If birth control pills would have been available during her time, Victoria's/all the world history would be different. Their marriage and Victoria's "unsubstantiated" affairs after Albert's death appear to be based more on a lust for sex and power than love and consideration.
There was a lot that transpired in Great Britain and the rest of the world during the Victorian era, too much to cover in a one hour read but they did a good job of hitting the highlights. The world was in transition from agriculture to industry, colonial expansion was consolidating around a few powerful counties and the stage was being set for WW1 and several revolutions. Many of these world events involved the children or grandchildren of Victoria, the "Grandmother of Europe." Good read worth the time.
