Product Description
Instead of trying to recreate the sound of his former band Kyuss, Josh Homme took a new approach to music. He crafted tight hard rock songs that were heavy on melody & light on vocals. While there is still a lot of fuzz coming from the amplifiers. 1998 de

Any similarities that Queens of the Stone Age may have to Kyuss are probably inevitable--all three members of this group were in Kyuss at one time or another. The intention of this band, however, is not to create Kyuss 2, but to make its own brand of noise. Falling somewhere between Can and Canned Heat, the trio brings an occasional electronic aura to the guitar-based chug of stoner rock. While not as brash and earsplitting as their previous band (singer-guitarist Josh Homme--a Jack Bruce sound-alike--lays back where Kyuss frontman John Garcia would have yelped), these guys have made a debut album that is nevertheless an intriguing, aggressive, trippy aural journey that bows down to no trend. --Janiss Garza
Review
A bit too cerebral to fall under the stoner-rock rubric (Fu Manchu). -- Entertainment Weekly

One further note. You know how you cant help but simply feel good listening to something like Steve Miller? This album has that same effect. You cant be upset jamming this. The music simply wont let you.
Enjoy!
SQ - I was worried about it before I heard it because I had read so many mixed reviews from various sources on the originally released CD. No worries here, it sounds stellar and not just jacked up, it's really clean.
The album itself - I don't know if anything will ever top Songs for the Deaf for me as a huge QOTSA fan as I think it's just about the perfect rock album. It shows off their range just like Rated R and was probably the best lineup Queens ever showed off. Homme's guitar sound on this album is nothing short of pure ear candy. Sorry I can't talk about QOTSA without talking about my favorite album of all time!!
With that said, this comes really really close. It's a different type of album than the concept oriented Songs for the Deaf, this original QOTSA album is just a straight up stoner rock masterpiece. The Kyuss vibe is still going strong in this one and there ain't nothin' wrong with that! The timeless hits are all here.. Regular John which has to be top 3 if not my most favorite QOTSA song out of the 100+ I have at my disposal. Avon, The Bronze, Mexicola. those 4 songs I mentioned are worth $100 to me and the rest is far from filler.
Whether it's through a good set of cans or the car stereo this is going everywhere I go for quite some time.
I'd really like to thank Josh Homme for rereleasing this album so that everyone can enjoy it and not just people with a lot of extra money to burn. I have not heard of or read anywhere that QOTSA have any new albums in the works, but I am very hopefull that they will once again put the side projects on hold and concentrate on QOTSA. Nothing against Them Crooked Vultures or Eagles of Death Metal as I'm a big fan of all Homme's past and present work but there's just something special about QOTSA. They are by far my favorite rock band of all time. For me nothing else even comes close. Very underappreciated here in the states.
Get this album as fast as you can. Amazon was fast and secure as always and it arrived in flawless condition.
If you are new to QOTSA this is a great place to start. Once you're hooked, go get Songs for the Deaf and the CD/DVD combo Over the Years and Through the Woods. IF you ain't hooked by then you're never going to be. Follow that up with Rated R Deluxe and Era Vulgaris. If you become addicted to Josh Homme and there's always a chance that will happen, go get Kyuss- Welcome to Sky Valley where the tranced out guitar work came from and Eagles of Death Metal's Death by Sexy where you can hear Josh get his Drum fix. Them Crooked Vultures is a super group featuring Homme and vocals and lead along with good friend and former QOTSA, Nirvana drummer and Foo Fighters frontman Dave Groel along with Led Zeppein's legendary bassist John Paul Jones. This is a great CD and I believe they have a follow up in the works. Check out the Desert Sessions series once you are addicted. There are so many related acts to QOTSA due to their extensive lineup over the years. You may also enjoy Mondo Generator featuring ex-Queens bassist Nick Oliveri another hard rock hero of mine..
If you like REAL hard rock music there's no doubt you'll enjoy QOTSA and this album especially. I'm not sure if I could have appreciated it as much if I started with this one, or truley understood how great it really is. I started with Songs for the Deaf then bought every related CD I could get my hands on. It too can be purchased here and if you doubt it's credibility, look it's reviews up. WOW!
Thanks Josh! You need to get Troy and the boys back in the studio and create another piece of rock history!

It represents a band creating their very own sound for the first time and is perhaps most notable for its strong compositions and Josh Homme's distinctive vocals. The bass is a driving force behind the sound as well as some distinct harmonies that you would expect to find on something a little more 'easy listening'.
I find it hard to fault this album - it really is a great listen and if you know your QoTSA, you won't be disappointed.
